hey, this could probably be put in the newbie section but whatever.

what effects would you suggest on a rack for a recording studio. so far I was thinking: 6ch headphone amp. compressor, power rack. and maby reverb. any things you say are "must have's" or "should have's" becouse I don't like alway's using software effects becouse they don't alway's sound right.

I was also thinking, could you have the rack hooked up to the output so you can send an induvidual track out to be edited and re-recorded or is that not suggested?

thanks

EQ is very important. So, I'd say rack up a nice parametric EQ box and a compressor box. Those are a must.

Thanks. and does anyone know of any cool (additional) voice effects that could be added to the rack (maby something to push up a frequency without speeding it up or something... thxs

A lot of people have patch bays in their rack, so they don't have to crawl around behind it to use what's in it.

I may be misunderstanding your question, but it almost sounds like you are going about this backwards - almost like "I've got this rack, and what should I do to fill it up?"

More important is to determine what you need to accomplish making music. If it fits in a rack, fine - but that shouldn't be the overwhelming consideration. For instance, your question about vocal processing might be more easily accomplished with software.

Buy something because you need it - not because you have empty rack spaces to fill. But you probably already know that... ;)

thanks little dog. no, fact is I don't even have a rack yet. i was just wondering becouse especially with guitar effects (like dist. wah.. ect) sound better thrue an actual device than thrue the computer . I was just wondering if there are any other processors that are better done on an external system than on the computer

(plus they look soo cool! :p )

damn near any external effect unit will sound better than it's software counterpart...if you pay the money for the REAL SHIT...

we're talking minimum 500 bucks (FMR RNC) for a compressor...a lot more for other stuff...and that's just the minimum

most people feel that money is better spent on GOOD plug-ins than on outboard until you can afford to get yourself the real shit.

 Last time I checked, the RNC was around $175. Unless you mean a pair of them with the fancy rack tray, but that's still only $400 or so. If I remember correctly.

you're right...
that was well before my first cup of coffee today...

i dont know if I was thinking of the pricing i generally see for the RNP (around 400-450 sometimes) or because I was thinking that it's the best compressor for under 500

I just latched onto a tc electronics c300 that may be the newbs caddy of a compressor. I use mostly dbx 160a's, RNC, and RNLA, but I couldn't pass it up and it sounds very nice on lots of different stuff. Vocals especially but it does a nice touch on acoustc and elec guitar.
Speck Electronics makes a really nice para eq (the ASC) that comes with or without an output tranny
The Kurzweil Rumour is a wonderful verb/delay/chorus/flange/etc box with some nice converters to boot.
And that's all I have to say about that........
