I'd like to find a low-cost solution to enter midi.... are there any keyboards without the frills (that are cheap) which allow you to enter midi into sonar?

You can program it manually using track view, that's what I do.
Any keyboard with a midi connection will work (as long as you can connect it to your computer). A drum machine willl work if you set up the keypad. Any midi input device will work, just depends on what you need to do.
Touch sensitivity is very important and cheap keyboards probably won't have it, you'll find yourself correcting manually which takes longer than just programming it in the first place, especially if you don't actually play keyboards, since your asking this question, I ass-u-me you don't.

If you do play keys, I'd hold out until you can afford a good keyboard with the features and feel that you like. then again I don't know what "cheap" is in your budget. the last time I looked a keyboard with good features was a minimum of $500.00 that's too steep for me!!! (more like $1000 with the features I want)

I have a KaySound MK 4902. Roland has the exact same keyboard called Evolution something.
About 100 bucks. 49 keys, Touch-sensitive, usb-ready, just plug it in and play. Never had a problem.

Casio Keys bigtime. Actually more like DX7 Keys. I dont think Madstrum is a Pianist, so it shouldnt be a problem. I have a Piano as well, and if one needs the action, maybe a Fatar or something, but for a non-pianist it is a great buy. The touch-sensitivity is fine.Torpid-x said:

Me, I'm a guitar player and don't own a guitar controller, so I use the mouse in piano view. One note at a time. My friends think I'm crazy, but I can put together some decent drum beats to get a song's form fleshed out in no time. Cut & paste, baby!

Don't forget you can use Virtual Piano as a midi keyboard, the VP that ships with cakewalk. I would consider any of the Evolution keyboards http://www.evolution.co.uk/ or the Roland PC160, 180 or 300.

The drum kit Alan recommends is very naturalistic sounding.
I use the VP and this soundfont to bash out a basic beat and then go through each note in Piano roll view like Chuck to line up timing, add crash cymbols etc.

Virtual Piano - Drums
I've tried the directions in this thread and others, can't get 'em to work for me. Regarding Soundfonts, aren't they just better sounding versions of the instruments my soundcard can already produce? I don't need fancy-sounding drums, just a basic drum sound would be fine.
I thought there was a way to make VP produce drum sounds, eg. striking the Eb would produce a kick drum, striking the G would produce a snare, etc. Can anyone tell me if this is possible?
ps. I'm using Pro Audio 9, I have both a SB Live, and a Wave 496 card. Thanks for any help.

Set your midi track channel to 10. It should make your soundcard default to drum sounds.

Hmmm....are you absolutely sure you followed all the soundfont instructions from Alan to the letter? It should work. I have a Live! and it worked for me and for many others too.
Soundfonts are sampled sounds, so the range of instruments they provide is vast. And realistic. But if you are after just basic drums, channel 10 is the midi default channel.......as ChuckU has posted.

Paul, one of these days you're going to have to walk me thru some Soundfont stuff, but for now, I'm a bit afraid of tweaking anything on the SBlive, as I don't want to f*** up any of my Delta-1010 settings.

ChuckU , yeah no problem, A1MixerMan did the same for me when I started out. I must say that I just got the delta 66 and omni outa the box, installed it and voila! everything worked, co-existed with My Live!- and I use win 98
But if you follow the intructions from Alan McGuiness, thread posted above, you will not have a problem. Trust me. He even tells us to use piano roll view to adjust timings and stuff. But most folk forget to physically connect both cards to the speakers, thats what catches em out. The Live! for soundfonts and the Delta 66 omni for audio.
Give it a go, tell me how you get on. Soundfonts are like getting religion, when A1Mixer Man told me about them and what I could do with them, using a qwerty k/b and/or VPiano, I saw the "light" and never looked back. And the drums that Alan recommended are awesome, imho.
