What's this button do?
Building a studio, have the building, materials, experience :D Well, experience with the building, anyways. This is going to be a project studio for my band as well as a couple other local bands we promote. Here is a list of the gear we have and plan on using for the studio (we have considerable PA stuff that isn't listed.):

Studio Projects B1
AT4040
KSM27
Stedman Pop Filter
6 boom stands
3-58's
1-57
1-beta 57
2-behringer 58 knockoffs
AT pro25 kick mic
2-ADK A51 SC1 small diaphragm condensers
1-Behringer ECM8000
2-MXL603s
Dbx 266xl
2-Alesis MEQ230
BBE 362 sonic maximizer
Various cabling including kiwi mic cables and high end planet wave instrument cables

This is the plan:
Mackie Onyx 1640 and FW card
KRK V8's and KRK 10" powered sub
Cubase SX3.0
AMD 64bit 3400+ DAW w/200 gig, 1 gig ram, etc. and dual LCD setup
2 RNC's in Funk Logic rack
KSM44
BLUE Baby Bottle
Joemeek TwinQ
Audix DP4 drum mic package
Lexicon MPX110
Nice phones (Beyer, don't remember the model)
5 More Me phones
Behringer HA8000 Phones amp

This setup puts me at about $8300 with $1600 alloted for the CPU which should be cake to find and build (Father in law is a programmer and I've been researching TigerDirect, newegg, Mwave, etc. for pricing.) We are building all desks and racks. Oh, that figure also includes $500 for various cabling and stands, patchbay (we plan on getting to know our soldering irons reeeeel well. :D )

So, what am I missing? I have a little room to play with $$$, but I don't want to if it isn't needed. Is there anything on here that is overkill or not enough? What am I missing?

Thanks,

Pete

No interface because I am using the firewire out on the onyx into the CPU firewire ins.

I am not buying the Behringer mics, I have them (as well as the other stuff in the top half)

I am really torn on the effects. Why the 500 over the 110? Are hardware effects going to be better than software effects? Any suggestions would be great.

Thanks,
Pete

:D Yo appetizer for a baracuda:]

Best FX I've used is made by Yamaha. There are different models that fit different wallets.

But, even the low end of Yam Fx are very good. Other models will do. And, of course, you can spend big time. You need to listen to some types and decide.

Stay away from streams with pirana. :D

Happy Spring
Green Hornet :p

If you're going to record on software, I'd go ahead and use software effects. Maybe pick up a UAD-1, or just use some of the great free vst plugins, and maybe a few quality commerical ones if you need.

For a kick mic, I dunno about that pro25.... I think it's the crappier version, and not the same as the atm25, which would be a lot better. Dont wanna skimp on something like that if you're going to be spending so much money.

I agree. It works really well for live work, but I am anticipating poor studio results. The Audix pack I have spec'd inncludes a D4, which I have never tried, but if it's anything like the D6, I will be happy. If not, I will buy the D6 at a later time. I have also been told by a lot of people that the 4040 makes a great kick mic.

Thanks,

Pete

The audix d4 is absolutely nothing like a D6. The D6 will smoke the D4 and the AT xxx25 mics. The AT4040 can certainly be a cool kick mic, but I would use it as a secondary mic, and not as your primary. Might as well get the D6 now. You are gonna want it quickly after hearing the D4 in a kick:D

Thanks for the input! What are some other good recomendations for drum kit micing? I like the four mic setup (kick, snare, two overhead) but my drummer really wants individual tom control. Four piece kit (small rack tom and floor tom) with splash, small crash, ride, large crash, and z-bell cymabals. All top quality drum gear (Pearl session select custom set.) Would like to keep price down, but I wouldn't mind adding a couple of LDC as overheads. I already have the 603s and the ADK's for SDC that should work fine. I can get the D6 for $150 new.

The little Sennheiser 604's work pretty well on toms:) Personally, I like a shure beta57a on snare top, but there are really a lot of choices available. Condensors are really a very personal decision. I like my KSM32's, AKG 414's or my AKG 451's on overheads. It really depends on what sound I am after for that specific kit, what the kit is, who is playing it and lastly (but not least) what mood I am in that day:D I also love having an AKG 414 on bottom snare and a Shure beta 91 inside the kick.

And I forgot, and it might not even be worth mentioning, but I have 3 of those sennheiser copycat mics from Radio Whack.
