What do guitarists use for drums?

Assumption: a lot of guitarists aren't necessarily very talented with a drum kit (that's an understatement in my case)...

so I was wondering what you guys like to use for drum sounds in your home recordings and why.

I use an assortment of ACID-type loops in Sonar, combined with fills, one shots and percussion loops to customize each track. Seems very intuitive and works well for me.

Anybody else use loops? Which ones/brand do you find to be the most useful?

uh.... drummers with a drum kit? Is this a trick question????

I would use an actual drummer over anything else given the choice... but when I'm recording at home I almost always use LiveSynth and The BlueJay Drums Soundfonts from Sonic Implants. Absolutely great drums.

I rarely use a drummer. I use whatever I can find to bang on, shoeboxes, cans, tables, guitar cases. I prefer the sound of organic percussion over any kind of loops or drum machines.

Alesis SR-16 & Boss Dr-770 linked together via MIDI...cool two drummer sound.

I also have an old set of Pearl drums....if you can play rythum guitar, you can play the drums. You know....left hand, right hand doing two different things at the same time.... to a beat.

I am not above the usage of anything for percussive purposes. My dog sometimes does not necessarily appreciate my musical experimentation, but he adjusts.

I've been known to repeatedly punch walls/old ladies, use toilet flushes/splashes, experiment with the different tones of flatulence, amplified queefs, Chevrolet backfires, and my favorite, the sounds of silence for percussion.

*edit* Oh yeah, and I use a ZOOM RT-323 drum machine

ever heard of MIDI... or Fruity Loops... or Drum Machines... a MIDI keyboard and a D4... etc... a lot of stuff other than real drummers

your condescending remarks grow ever tiresome...

I use good old-fashioned drums. I can't find the right drummer, so I do it myself. I often find that I practice more on the drums than I do my guitar..... and not because I need to, which I do, but because drums are fun as hell.

drums......drums gave me carple tunnel......DRUMS BAD

well drums and shotput and guitar and bass and just about living on the computer.

but uhh......try a drummer

or fruity loops

freak

Drums not bad, drums good.

And I agree with Bard, they are fun as hell. I had a set for a while, and I definitely practiced them more than my poor, neglected guitar...

I spent the last two years recording with no drums or percussion. I used all acoustic instruments (guitar, open-back banjo, mandolin, dobro, ukulele, acoustic bass guitar) and it was a great experience. It was interesting to explore the percussive character of acoustic instruments and it was an interesting challenge to establish a consistent rythym in the absence of a drum kit. I was well on my way to becoming an acoustic iconoclast (or perhaps a roots musician) when I listened to some old four-track cassette recordings mixed to tape during the late 80's. The music was very rough (sort of Camper Van Beethoven meets the Fall) but I caught some kind of bug and began a long-term project to re-record some of the old material. To make a long story short, I bought an Alesis SR-16 and began recording it along with some actual drums to give the songs some sense of reality. In addition, I just purchased Ableton to experiment with loops. I may buy a couple of drum loop CD's or work on creating loops from the SR-16 or real drums.

its not all that hard...., just give your car away so you`ll always need a ride, pick a really hardcore drug habit, drink a lot of booze, practice being totally bi-polar... and in no time you`ll be thinking just like a drummer! :)

I use Fruity Loops with real samples from Drumkit from Hell.

Works great for me.

Does Fruity Loops combined with real drum samples like Drumkit From Hell result in believable and organic-sounding drum tracks? When I tried the Fruity Loops demo I thought it sounded rigid and dance-oriented (I didn't try it with good samples though...)

Before any drummers chime in, I know nothing will sound like a live drummer!!! I'm looking for what might sound closest and that I can use silently at home, so as not to upset the delicate balance between wife & kids and my music.

I wouldn't mind trying something other than Acid loops if the end result is better and/or more flexible for Blues/Rock/Jazz, yet doesn't involve spending hours and hours programming.

Maybe I should have structured this thread as a poll? Alesis SR-16 and Fruity Loops both have been mentioned a couple of times. How do they compare?
