Hey yall, I am wondering on what Amp I should get for recording. I know I want a Modeling amp. It doesnt even really have to be a Amp right now. I am contemplating a POD. But I am just thinking I might want somthing More. Somthing like a Vetta, or Cyber-Twin or Cyber-Deluxe. Keep in mind I cant try any of these units, I can only Mail Order (Alaska thing). I am only going to recording Direct, I can not Mic a Amp. I have a Delta-44 if any on is curious. Just wondering on what the Best thing to do is.

OK, just my opinion here. I have a Line6 AX2, a POD and a Johnson J Station. I love the AX2 and is my weapon of choice with a mic in front of it for recording. Next in the pecking order would be the POD. For my money the amp models in it sound better than the J Station. It's also twice as much as the J Station but the J Station has a S/PDIF output. You can get great sound out of the J Station but if I could only have one out the two choices, it'd be the POD. YMMV.

Well yeh the POD is kind of a Gimmie I guess. I guess I am looking for somthing a little more High End.

For ease of use I would vote Boss GT-6, digital outs.
Give it a look.

For Recording the Pod or Pod Pro hands down, no other seems to compare. For live situations I can't comment on anything but the Line 6 spider (excellent for smaller gigs) and the Tech 21 trade mark 60. (all around nice sound but not programable) Both work well. The trade mark 60 has a XLR out for direct mixer connections.

Oh yea POD...

Just re read your post and if you can not mic an amp I would suggest the POD series. IF you can afford the Pod Pro it has all the true studio quality components needed, like outputs etc. My studio is now in my home where I do jingles, sound for comercials etc... I record absolutely screeming guitars at 2:00 am without waking anyone in the house. The Pods also have great clean sounds too. Personally I think that if someone thinks the Pod does not sound good, then they are not using correctly. JMHO,

Joe

Tech 21 trademark 10 has a direct out and is the best modeling amp out. gt-2 if you dont need the amp part.

This unit doesnt use dsp so It sounds ten times better than the pod and other units out there.

What...uhhhh...10 times  ...i've got a POD Pro and a GT2 and i've played a Tech21 a bunch too, although i don't presently own one...and because the SansAmp does not have a DSP

wow, my experience is a lot different than yours. while i like the SansAmp stuff and use it, especially the Bass Driver DI into a BASS POD Pro, IMO SansAmp stuff is not as versatile nor as tonally robust as the POD stuff... :) ...IMO...

If that's true (and I'm not saying it isn't), then there are a LOT of people not using the Pod correctly.. I haven't heard anything that has changed my "no thanks" vote.

You might want to give the digitech series a listen.. I've got the RP100, and I'm very happy...

The downside though is that it gets a little tiring sifting through hundreds of different settings to ensure that you get the perfect sound for the song you are recording...

I happen to have a DGstomp which is like a pod thats built right. and I still like the modeling or emulation I get from using the tech 21 stuff. I can tell a dsp unit from a real circut with half my brain tied behind my back (I have to do that anyhow just to make it fair to you guys).:D

do you need a modeler or modeler/fx unit?

i guess this thread is rock-centric, but i'll chime in anyway. 90% of what i do is sweet tones (lover's rock), staccato mutes & skanks (R&B/reggae) and glassy/bell (blues) tones. every once in a while i go for the heavy distortion sound, so I got the tech 21 sansamp classic.

to me, a heavy percentage of the POD sounds are flavor of the month... i can get that flavor of the month sound from my tired old digitech rp-1 chained in before the sansamp classic just like i would with my real amp.

if you don't already have an fx processor and you don't mind printing your fx while recording, then the POD is the thing for you, but if you already have an fx processor and you are looking for something to purely replace your AMP in the chain, then i'd go with the sansamp classic.

I haven't heard much discussion about the fender cyber twin as a choice for a modeling amp. I have never heard one...i was just wondering if anybody has one and if they are satisfied.

Cyber Twin & Cyber Deluxe

They sound great, but do they have a direct out for recording that takes in acount for the speakers no longer being in the chain?

I record wit the POD all the time, I seldom use the effects, maybe just the reverb, which is modeled after the appropriate amps as well.

The Best thing about the POD is recording direct. I always can find a sound that works well with my mix. Some times I do record the guitar direct to the Recorder and then use inserts to connect the POD. This way I can continue altering the tone to fit the mix just right after the fact.

I do use the Tech 21 Trade Mark 60 which is the big brother to the trade mark 10. But even with the direct to console output,, you loose the speaker tone quality. So you would need to mic it in the studio.

I do believe the initial post said direct recording, so micing an amp is out.

Boss GT-6 sample

I must admit this was my first recording on my new Delta 1010.
Used the digital out and went with a "High Gain" pre-amp.
The guitar is the Dillion on the left with the bridge pick up.

Cant wait until I work the full features of the Delta and the GT-6 is only a couple months old too. Still tweaking.

About the GT-6, it does look interesting. And I have heard alot about it. Mainly at www.digevent.com/guitarmania the guy that hosts (Marc Seal) uses one for the show and for recording. Main thing is his type of music and the music on your Mp3 is Not anywear near to what I am going to be playing or even want to play No offence or anything, just that I was about 10years old when the 80's ended. So yes you could say I am a Nu-Metal punk, lol.

It hurts to be aged. No offense taken:D Yes, my hereoes were George Lynch, Richie Blackmore, Angus, Bon Jovi type style.
Anybody watch "Musician" on Bravo last night... Tony Bennet was on, very interesting...

Tusin,
Try before you buy and you will not be dissappointed. I believe Marc Seal has a few shows he's done on Nu-Metal or Punk. Play what inspires you and listen to no one else.
