Ok this is my question..My souncard has a spdif or however u spell it line in. Im going to purchase a mixer and i need to know how to hook it up to the sound card...what kind of special cord do i need?

What soundcard and what mixer?....S/PDIF is for digital signals...unless u have a digital mixer, you wont be using that to hook it up...hopefully the card has analog inputs also....what type connector does the mixer have?....

I dont to much about my soundcard but it has a line in, mic, and speakers. heres the spec on the mixer,
> 18 Inputs Total (14-Channel)
> 6 balanced microphone/line input channels with insert points
> Unique M/S setting for CH1+2, CH3+4, CH5+6.pair switchable
> Individual phantom power switches with master on/off switch
> Mid swept 3-band EQ plus low cut filter
> 1 Aux + 1 FX mixing buses per input channel(pre/post selectable)
> Peak indicators on all inputs
> Channel ON/Mute buttons
> 60mm high quality linear faders.
> Auto MONO function for stereo input channels
> Patchable built-in stereo 7-band graphic equalizer
> Insert points on Groups and Main stereo output
> Balanced outputs on groups, main stereo and mono outputs
> Dual 13 segment LED level meter
> MS metering mode
> Large writing area under each channel fader
*PLUS
> Built-in 255 program digital effects device
> Free Rack Ears a $50 value

All i want to know is how to hook the thing up..Thanks so much..

2 more questions only, I promise....does your soundcard input take a 1/8" stereo plug or what?......what is the name of the mixer (brand/model)?.....probably youll go from the main stereo outs (unless it has monitor outputs, which it may) to the soundcard.....

Yes my sound card takes that small 1/8...the name of the mixer is a Phonic MM1805X 14-Channel Compact Mixer w/ EFX & Rack Ears .
I wish i would of had u at the store with me today! ahhaha...i need to know the EXACT cords to get so i can get them...Thank u so muchhh.

Ok, you are definitely going to need a cable that goes from 2 TRS 1/4' to a single 1/8" stereo.....Radio Shack to the rescue.....just tell them that and youll be in business.....hook the 1/8' to the LINE IN on the soundcard....hook the 1/4 inch plugs into the stereo outs, one to the left, one to the right...the stereo outs are all the way over to the right towards the top.....have you bought the mixer already?...

nope..i didnt buy the mixer yet..i was going to buy it today...but didnt cause of that factor

sort of on the same track...

Gidge,

When using a mixer with a computer, is it possible to run the output of the computer audio card back into the mixer without causing a feedback loop?

I have a Yamaha 01 digital mixer and I just bought a Lexicon core2 audio interface for my pc.

Im pretty sure you can, Trak...or put it this way, I know people here do it....I mix totally in software without a mixer....

2G,

I havent heard a whole lot about that mixer....it looks like a lot for the money...it seems that Mars Music is the only distributor in the US, so Im assuming thats where you are looking....Mackie mixers are the shit around here, the VLZ Pro series in particular...Ive never heard anything bad about them in any magazine review or from anybody thats used them....however, if that mixer sounds good, like I said, its alot for the money.....

Yep, thats were i went..Mars Music...know i have to convince mah dad to go back to the store to take me..!
Im only 17 and im learning alot about music..but thanks again..I heard the mackies are good... but im going to try this out..Wish me luck...

Yeah, good luck....17 and getting 14 channel mixer with digital effects and recording on computer....i didnt even have a 4 track cassette yet at 17....I hope you young guns know how lucky you are.....

I kno cause i read post here where people back in the days were recording whole albums on reel or 4 tracks...
now today we have unlimited tracks and much other stuff.

Scenario2G,

I purchased a Phonic Mixer to do some simple recording of my drumkit and was less than satisfied with their product. The model I had was a MM1002 and started with one Shure SM-57 Mic. This setup was terrible as I couldn't get volume on my recording. By that I mean I had to crank the stereo all the way up to hear what I had actually recorded and at that point the feedback was too bad to actually get a decent playback.

Anyway, long story short I returned the Phonic mixer after purchasing 2 more mics and doing some testing in the Mars mixing dept. I found out that the preamps on the Phonic mixer weren't enough to make a viable recording. Now that I have the Mackie VLZ Pro 1202 I can actually hear what I recorded (and it sounds very good even at low volume).

I'm not sure how it will work if you go directly into a PC but from what I was told the Phonic Mixers are a new line for Mars and they didn't have any customer feedback at the time I bought mine.

Hope you get to read this before you get dad to take you back to Mars!

Thank God i got guidance at this place~~!!! man god must told me not to go to the store today cause i didnt get it cause mah dad got a attitude with me..hahahhaha.....were supposed to looking for a mixer on monday...since i hear so much about Mackie, im taking it under DEEP consideration..thanks man

One more point for Mackie....thanks to Bedubs for the info....I was leary of them because Mars Music are the ONLY u.s. distributor and it packed ALOT of features for the price....If you look at Mackie, you definitely want something from the VLZ PRO series....they have the XDR preamps that are pretty damn nice for the price...you wont get as many channels and preamps for the price as that Phonic, but the sound will be 20 times better....

I don't know the 01 but I can basically guarantee that you can. Usually the hook up is like this; Signal comes into the 'channel in', then out to the computer either through the channel 'Direct out', or the 'Sub Group outs'/ 'Bus outs'. The outs from the computer connect either to the 'channel tape return' or to a 'channel in' on a seperate channel of the board. You have to think this through a bit and trace the signal paths in your head (or on paper), but once the input and output from the pc arent assigned to the same signal path you wont get feedback. It is ok to connect your monitors to the 'control room outs' and listen to the signal that comes back from the PC through them, once you dont take the signal from the PC and send it back into the PC through the 'sub outs' or plug the 'direct out' of that channel back into the PC.

After my head stopped spinning... I was able to make sense out of vox's post. I got it workin now, good lookin out yo.
