If you choose to use a compressor for kick drum, which brand, model do you use! I've used some that I don't like, some I do.

i mic my pearl export kick with an EV RE38, i run that into a Wackie 2404 and then have a Symetrix 425 on the insert. i like it fine. i'm sure there's a better comp out there, but this one tames the levels enough and gives a plenty usable sound. it's a stereo compressor (and dual mono), so i use the other side for bass guitar. it works fine for that, too. not great, but fine.

i've found that you've gotta watch out, though, b/c it's easy to make the kick sound like a basketball..... :D

fwiw, i didn't like my RNC on kick (or bass) at all. too "nice" sounding....not "dirty" enough for my tastes......beautiful on guitar and vocals, though.

Try an Alesis 3630 for the kick. Its not good enough for vocals, but its cheap, and I like the tone on my kick. But dont use it on the snare. It wont tame it without adding too much distortion.

I've heard some good feedback on use of the Presonus Bluemax compressor on kick....unfortunately haven't used it myself but a friend w/a project studio uses one and likes
