I was messing round with a sample, and I tuned it to something useable. I put some bass and piano over it, but can't work out what chords fit.

E A C# (a maj?) sort of fits but doesn't sound right

What chords sound fitting to you?

the track is "you"

it sounds like . . .

it is predominantly in A

The leading chord is Amaj7
the change goes to F#m7

You can play it in two ways, Amaj7 then F#m7
or, keeping the bass on A: Amaj7 then A6

In either case, it's kind of neat to keep the Ab from the Amaj7 chord in on both the second chords (F#m7 or A6)

Anyway, that's how I'm hearing it.

Amaj7 works pretty well for the first chord. For the second one maybe a Fmin7, but I'm not sure I like that or not.

Yeah this is the way it sounds to me as well: Amaj7 to F#m (or F#m7)

(technically gecko, that note would be called G#, not Ab, if it's in an Amaj7 chord) :)

I agree! However, my brain has a quirk in it that says some notes are always flats and others are always sharps (irrespective of what key it's in). For example, in my mind, F# is always F#, and never Gb, and likewise for C# (never Db). Perversely, Eb, Ab and Bb are always that and not D#, G# or A#.

So I just call it as my mind sees it.

the chords Obviously are Amin F G E7 .... although i personally would use a Bdim7 instead of the G....

functional theory time...
the A minor is the tonic although it feels ,thanks to the F & G , as the 6 chord in c maj which gives it the feeling of a vi substitue for the I chord...

the F is functionaly th sub dominant in our progression... it's the VI in Amin and the IV in C major so it works well here...

the G is the curiousity... it's the VII in a decending A melodic minor and the V in Cmaj... it's use here is essentially as a secondary dominant functionally... setting up the E7 for the turn around... it tends to sound a bit ambiguouis (sp?) that's why i would probably use the Bhalf dim here... as that would give you a :

i VI ii V7 in the key of Amin make sense????

hmmm, I don't think 'obvious' is the right word

While I agree that you could use the progression Am F G E7 for that sampled piece, I don't think it is that obvious.

Having listened to it again to test this progression out, I have made some observations.

The bass is hovering around A throughout.

the synthy-kind of sound has predominantly two strong notes, the G# and the occasional F#. There is also a less dominant C# playing with these two.

The tinkly high piano is doodling mostly around E, C# and B after starting with a progression of: B C# A F#

To my ear, the strong presence of the G#, F# and C# pushes the chord structure away from using Am or F, although the Bdim7 (or G) and E7 would slot in okay, i.e. you could try Amaj7, F#min7, G, E7 (again sitting on an G# on all chords). But to me, that progression is not as satisfying (especially with an E) as just using variations of Amaj7 and F#m7.

I played the Am F G E and the E A C# progressions along with the track, but neither does anything much for me.

couldn't beleive that those wouldn't work for you... but discovered i cued up the wrong tune... MY BAD... the right tune though sounds to me as Amaj7 and either a Dmaj7 or Bmin7... sorry if i confused anyone...

cheers for replies! haha yea I was scratching my head dementedchord trying to work out how you got those chords, I think its the sample that is throwing it into a bit of mess, I sampled a choir and I think there must be a note in their harmony that isn't working

lol demented. Yeah I was wondering what the hell you were smoking.

Although in saying that, you've given me an idea for that other track!
