What can you do with cheap mics?

Congratulations, man! I liked how it sounds...
I agree with Chessrock, the guitar sound is not that great... specially on the solo.
Besides that, i think it´s a nice sounding song...
I would like hear again if re-record that guitar...

Phil...since you're already getting specific constructive criticism from those in the know like Chess, I would just like to say, whatever is lacking in the sonic sense is well compensated for by great vocals, excellent song structure and a whole lotta vibes...good tune brotha!...didn't know ya had in in ya!...very enjoyable... :D

PS...I'm still waitin' on that custom-made turquoise Ela-M 250 clone... ;)

Phil.
the sound is great & developing as well.
If your mics are cheap my are dumpster dive treasures (well, they are actually).
You make the point loud & CLEAR (in a sonic, mic'd up signal path sense) that tools are tools & some tools are owned by tools whilst others are used as tools.
Toolie doo!

Great song, Phil, and NO you can't tell you used cheap mics. Very good mix. Something I've found out over the years is; even a cheap mic can sound great if EQ'd right. Personally I've used SM57 for bass drum, cymbals vocals and everything in between. It's all in technique. Watch the signal volume and tone and you can use about anything. SM58's are excellent also. I have the expensive condensers, but I like the SM57 the best for overall!

Love the song, Phil !!

My one suggestion would be to bring the vocals up just a bit at the beginning of the song. I really had to "lean in" to hear the vocals when they first started. I'm a vocalist, so of course that's what I listen for.

Great song. The structure, story, playing, all very good.

As I said you on mp3 section, I like your overall mix (punchy mix that works) (only don´t like guitar tone as I said too and snare sound that are a little undefined).
You already talk about pres and mics (altough not relates the drum setup, which I suppose is ok)

I was thinking, if you are trying to improve something on your gear (who knows...)
1010 LT can be a "weak link on your chain".
(I don´t know it, but coasts almost half the price of 1010 rack and is one of cheapest M audio´s converter (relation number inputs outputs /price).

Because...your mics don´t sounds cheap :D

cheap mics?

Nice song. I need to listen again. I didn't catch the reverb on the drums or the over processed guitar because I was tryin' to tune in to the lyrics. Maybe a little more presence on the lead vocals would help but wow... I like the song a lot! Good job.

edit: On second listen I agree that the lead did kinda sound like a modeler... it just wasn't "big" but I still didn't see the problem with the drums. And on second listen, I like the song even better and btw...great vocals!

Nice!

Sounds good, I use cheap mic.s in my studio (one from RadioShack) and had great compliments from bands recorded from them in my studio.(46.00 Bucks)
