I want to replace my noisy p4 laptop for mobile recording. I would like to know what you folks are using and how well your laptop is working.

I will be running Cubase SX3 & a firepod.

I have a shot at a Dell Inspiron 700m for fairly cheap. Wondering if I should go for it.

Thanks so much,
Josh

go for somethin with atleast a 1.8ghz processor, 512ram (prefebly 1 gig), 40 gig hardrive

I'm running a custom built (by me) system.
as for notebooks, I'm using a brand new HP Special Edition notebook, which is pretty quiet.. Just make sure you have plenty of speed & memory. I'm running 2GB RAM, I suggest a whole lot more than just 512mb... Minimum of 1GB i'll say.

apple apple apple apple apple.

thats what i'm using, for sure ;)

mmmmm i love me appleees.

I have a couple of Dell notebooks in the house, and with both I find I get noise from the power adapter. I don't mean a whine, I mean something internal that appears on anything you record. Possibly ground loop.

Of course, I can unplug when recording (and do), but it depends on your batteries and how long you want to record for ...

You can get replacement power supplies, and other (non-dell) laptops may have the same issue (I don't have one to check), but it is something to be aware of.

On the noise problem my Acer notebook has a grounded power adapter which causes a hum loop under certain conditions. Something to watch out for.

As for speed of computer I would think it depends on the number of tracks recorded at once and sample/bit rates used.

I've had an Asus laptop for 18 months, 1.8 Pentium M with 1GB of ram. I've done 8 track 24/48 recording with the firepod no problem and it's quiet.

The modern laptops with the Core 2 chips would be even quicker

Well Ive decided on a dell 700m that I am getting a great deal on.. I wont be doing MUCH mixing on this laptop, it be mostly for getting the tracks recorded. Mixdown will be on my p4 3.6ghz desktop.

My Compaq used to give an aweful sound when I recorded with it. I got a generic power supply and everything is fine and dandy now with that, just the fans are so loud.

Currently using a Macbook Pro Core Duo 2.0Ghz.

Feels like having my cake and eating, too.

Of course I paid for it, so it better feel that way... but this is hands down the nicest PC I've ever had.
