Herbi-Whore
just curious, Im pretty sure I came across something on the net that said there was basically two brands of RAM too choose from, because the rest were crap, and troubleshooting troublesome RAM was a pain in the ass. Ill be damned if I can remmeeber where I read that tho, shoulda wrote it down.

Did I percieve this correctly or does it matter? and if it does, what brand names are they ? :D

oh i guess itd help to say what kind...DDR, specifically looking at 512.

Mak, I'd stick with the stuff from Crucial Technology as I have heard figures of the really bargain basement RAM having a "funkiness rate" of as much as 25%. Not worth it IMHO.

Canader...I love that! :D

SITE NOT AVAILABLE

lol , well it is the weekend and a lot of sites are slow period. Thanks for the reply tho, Im about to head off to some nerdy computer stores to find out more. Im pretty sure I had read about that in THG somewhere, but like I said Ill be damned if I can remmeeeeeeeeeeber where...

I believe Canader came about from a slurred booze filled evening I had *once*.

crucial is good, that is what I use. Also get RAM testing software. When you get your new RAM run the software and do a full test. It sends data, returns the data and tests your RAM cell by cell to see if your RAM is returning errors. It takes a long time but it is worth it. If you get errors, return the RAM. I've had more than a few sticks of even premium RAM that have not fully passed tests. . Remember there are lot of people out there that counterfeit or falsely mark premium RAM. Unless you are familiar with chip #'s it can be hard to identify. Every application you open is loaded into your RAM. If your RAM corrupts data you get corrupted files. Eventually, blue screen of death. It's worth the extra bucks. I actually use ECC RAM myself, a lot of DAW people will tell you not to because it's a bit slower but I don't mind for the extra protection against errors. When you do this for a living i find stability to be slightly more desirable than performance.

Crucial and Micron are the only 2 I buy.
Generally if a RAM stick lasts a few months its a good indication you wont have any problems with it.

Crucial or Corsair both great, Both made by Micron, Corsair XMS tests out higher than there regular stock, in other words if your a tweaker you can push them hard.

micron is pretty good.
Stay away from samsung or anything like that.
if it doesn't say what it is don't buy it.

I use micron too. Never a problem with it.
I see "PNY" (I think its called) all over the place. Any comments on it?

Yeah I heard Samsung is tight but hever tried it, Kingston ditto.

PNY is every where and I have used it and have not had problems.

But as said above I may have to agree crucial fast reliable good price for the bang you get out of them, and the rep for being the best. if you got the money crucial or corsair, corsair may be a little more if you get the xms stuff and probably not worth( even though I bought in) Corsair uses Micron chips on their DDR modules. Their PC2100 and PC2400 uses the 7.5ns chips that Micron produces. So it may not be worth the bucks to buy great mem with another name on it.

I also use Crucial and no problem.

Final vote buy em all:D

I live in Boise (the headquarters of Micron). Anyway, Crucial and Micron are the same company. I would think they're the same RAM.

Corsair is not made by Micron. It's made by a European company called Infineon. A good friend of mine is an engineer at Micron and told me this.

Yes, Crucial is a subsidiary of Micron . The memory chips used by Corsair are bought from micron not assembled by micron , just hand chosen for the xms mem mod. No corsair and micron aren't the same co. but corsair makes memory using the chips built by micron. These are hand picked for there ability to be stable at a higher frequencey that is also why they call pc 2700 the xms 3000 saying this tested out stable at pc 3000 speeds, It's magical you see, that why you can't take the heat sink off, You would see that your memory may not be what you expected it to be. ;) Shhhhh...

RAM WARFARE...

ahhh thanks for the replies guys, Its really nice to be able to go buy stuff and have a clue from peoples, not just articles. Ive been looking at newegg alot, and yes they have nice prices for a wide range of things im looking at, but....THEY DO NOT DELIVER TO CANADA.....WTF is with that eh ??? Goddamn its not like it has to go overseas or anything...oh well Im just gonna go drive my rusty truck through one of our overlypriced computer parts retailers and take what i need...:) :)

i use kingston as well.

i purchased a drum machine/sampler from a canadian company and it went through customs and got held up for 2 days. i'm thinking WTF its not drugs its a sampler, and its CANADA not columbia.

its also funny how those yorkville monitors, and generally anything canadian costs less in the US...I just dont get it, its like we gotta pay more to live in a freezing ass country...as if freezing our asses enough isnt enough. Ok im done :D

On another note, I went all around town on saturday checking out computer retailers. I spoke to no less than 5 salesmen, all who said brand of ram really doesnt matter, they all use generic. I guess if it works it works, but I will be inclined to go with what is most recommended. Its also funny that of all those salesmen, only one mentioned Kingston, and literally no mention of the others (RAM) that are mentioned in this thread.

Yeah, generic is fine for salesmen who need to play Tetris and watch pr0n, but this is serious. Get Crucial.

Nice copy, huh? Seriously, Kingston has been around the consumer market for a while, so I'm not surprised to hear that. If you can get Crucial to ship free to Canada, I'd do that, if not, any of the names above will do.

I switched to corsair because i couldn't find CL 2 crucial, do they have CL2 crucial yet? I would be interested to know. The performance difference between 2.5 and 2 is quite a bit and if you scrounge around you can often find 2 for close to the same price as 2.5. I benchmarked the difference and it was almost equivalent to adding another 100mhz to my processor speed.

Samsung doesn't work well with MSI boards, well in my experiences. 3 different sticks of Samsung RAM caused lockups on MSI boards I've owned.

Not sure how they work on other boards though.
