I've got a Digitech RP50, $60. The newer RP80 is the same thing with an expression pedal. It took some effort to set up patches I liked. I used it direct to record the guitars in my signature line song. Also, a standard volume pedal can be plugged into the RP50 as an expression pedal.
As for the comment above about ending up just using a couple of sounds anyway, yeah, I use three or four most of the time. But I think a lot of hobbyist guitarists settle into that kind of groove.
