i'm gonna upgrade to 1GIG of ddr RAM memory

right now i got 500, and it are two different pieces of ram, made by another brand, and thats no good

my brother who is an IT specialist told me APACER is a good brand to go with

but i donno anything about it ;... so you guys have any real decent recommendations ?

lets say price is not an issue, its just gotto be rock solid stuff,

and yes, my motherboard supports PCM400 (or pcm3200 ;... how do you call it) ;.... but do those new DDR ram things really go faster ?

thanx,
earworm

Apacer is Crap!

Samsung,Corsair,Crucial,OCZ,Mushkin....cant go wrong with any of those.

I agree with seryozha Apacer is crap. I think you need to smack your brother up side his head for suggesting it.

Go to your mobo manufacturer's website, look for your model, check out the compatible ram and get some of that

I use generic, unbranded DDR ram in this computer (1x512MB) which has worked just fine for me this last year. Memorybrands don't say me shit.
But what do I know? I'm just another IT specialist.

very interesting !

so why is apacer crap ? did you ever have problems with it ? or did you only hear people talk about it? (i don't have any idea)

and why are the other brands like SAMSUNG better ?

my motherboard supports most kinds of RAM types,
its a pretty new MSI motherboard that supports that new DDR400mhz ram
(or what is it)

so...any reasons why 'this' is crap and 'that' aint ?
+ can anyone suggest me a nice brand that has 1 GIG of ddr ram ? seems to be difficult to find;.

thanx

Not sure what you're expecting here.

For every post that says Pimpleshit ram is the best, another will say pimpleshit stinks up the planet.

You have to decide what you need it for. Are you going to overclock? If so, you'll want to look at PC3500 or PC4000 ram. What sort of timings are you aiming for? Are you interested in stability or being 0.1 degrees off frying your rig? There are 100's of oc'ing forums all over the net and you can read a lot more bulls hit about tight timings and best brands than you'll see here.

If you're not going to clock, then just get something that will live without fuss on your mobo and be happy

Its mainly stability that is the issue. Unstable ram causes a lot of blue screens and thats not fun...

I have Kingston 512 DDR400 and Samsung 256 DDR400 in my system,,

i'm ONLY interested in stability,

i might start overclockin in a year or so, but definately not now,
i had lots of problems with rotten ram last year,
so now its time to do an upgrade and make sure my system runs smoothly

"Kingston 512 DDR400 and Samsung 256 DDR400 "

gonna do a little search to see if i can find "differences" between Kingston, samsung and apacer

and.... is it 100% safe to use TWO different brands of ram in yer PC ?
cause thats what people told me: DO NOT put two different motherfckrs on one motherboard

..once again, i'm not a computerspecialist, i'm just trying to figure out what won't give me headaches...

I always used apacer in the past. Because i was forced to, its the only memory that my company allowed me to replace bad memory with. The apacer Memory always came back not working or crashing the systems. Or sometimes it would not even run at alower clock speeds.

Samsung,Crucial,Corsair,Mushkin,OCZ, they all seem to do a better job of testing their memory so that they only select the BEST chips for the board.

If you want reliability,Stability, go with a better known and trusted name brand.

Of course, this is just my opinion based on my own experience.

""If you want reliability,Stability, go with a better known and trusted name brand.""

thats what i'm looking for, well, my brother still has his Apacer ram, and never really had problems with it ...

so it seems like Samsung seems to be a wellknown and respected brand ?
i've been reading stuff on other forums, sites... but its hard to find reliable info ;..

so there isn't something like a Shure sm57 ;.. but in the RAM WORLD ?
i'm not looking for the top of the bill, well, that's fine, but you know, now i'm putting some extra $$$ inmy PC and i want it to work;.work...work;... nothing else

thanx for the support, but i'm not done yet

cheers,

earworm the most important thing is that the ram is compatible with your mobo.
I repeat my suggestion, that you find the list of recommended ram from your mobo manufacturer, and take it from there. After that it's how much you want to spend, what you're prepared to pay for better performing ram etc.

I do suggest (as Bulls Hit said) going to the mobo's website , most have qualified and tested memory listed. Most of them are those brand's i listed before. There is no "SM-57" in memory, at least in my opinion.

Try.

tomshardware.com

Most of their "system guides" include name brand memory (mushkin,OCZ,Samsung,Crucial,Kingston,Corsair).

If you want stability, go to the Mobo's website, pick they memory they have said is tested and will work. I sound like a broken record(bulls hit and I)but thats the best you can do with stability. If (i doubt) Apacer is on the memory tested list, get it, it will prob. be the cheapest on the list.

IMHO

Me, I tend to go with unbranded RAM...but I always go for modules that are rated higher than the speed I'm currently running at. In my Athlon system with RAM running at 2100, I use modules rated at 2700. My P4, I have modules rated at 3200 running at 2700...

This system has actually worked very well for me. The one time I get branded memore...Kingston ValuRam 512 meg PC2100, it failed to work at PC2100 on the most lenient speed settings...

Of course, ymmv...

ok, checking the MSI website as i speak,
and looking at the manual of my mobo

so...just tell me if i start sounding like a prick;
but whats the difference between DDR and DIMM memory ?
(i see my mobo supports both of them)

There is no difference, they mean different things.
DIMM is double sided inline memory module. You'll see the memory chips on both sides of the ram stick.
DDR is double data rate which means the memory gets transmitted to the cpu on both the rise and fall of the voltage spike, so 2 bits per clock. The older single data rate memory could only transmit 1 bit per clock cycle.

If you use DDR400 and your fsb is running @ 800Mhz, your theoretical maximum memory bandwith is 6.4Gb/sec

awesome, you've been really supportive,
now i'm reading lots of stuff, so i'll beat myself trough this jungle of computer terms :)
