Since I'm new around here, I thought what better way is there to introduce myself than to share some of my work. I'm pretty new at home recording. I spent a few years with a 4 track cassette recorder and wanted to get better sounding demos so I now have a computer based DAW. This is really my first work from that set up. I do mostly songwriter demos as that is what I mostly do although as I get better at recording, I will probably fill out my mixes with some more instruments. I actually recorded this about 2 years ago and haven't done anything since (except a remix or two ;)) as I have been busy with a new child, new house, new job and a move to Nashville.

Here is the sum total of my relavent equip (definitely a budget operation) :D:

PIII 1Ghz cpu
SB Live value sound card
Roland XP-50 keyboard
Midiman Audio Buddy pre
Alesis Dual channel compressor/limiter
Digitech TSR-12 Multi effects (not used much any more as I generally record dry tracks and add effect plugins)
Ovation Celebrity accoustic gtr
AKG 535 EB condensor mic
2 very old Shure Unisphere B mics ( from when I used to gig some. Not used much anymore) lol
Old Fender 12 string (not used here)
Very old Peavy Horizon II elec. guitar (not used here & sucks, but, hey, a Strat ain't in the budget) :D
Peavy MX VTX series guitar amp (130 watts w/ blackwidow speaker) (not used here either)
Soon to be delivered - Pod 2.0 so I can add some elec guitar to my demos w/o pissing off the neigbors :D

I don't consider myself an excellent musician. I struggle some to get the parts down right. I used to be a music major (trumpet) and gigged a lot with the guitar, but my chops are nearly non existant now. I do think I have a decent voice and a pretty good ear.

So anyway, that's me in a nutshell. Here's my song, my first serious work in recording. I would enjoy any feedback on potential recording/mixing improvements, about the song itself, or anything. I'm pretty thick skinned from being told "no" around Nashville, so it's hard to hurt my feelings ;). Of course positive feedback is also welcomed ;) ;D

I've just started to listening to some of all of your work posted here and I can there is some great stuff and great talent in this place. So, hello all. I hope to learn a lot here and help as much as I can.

Sorry for the novel :D

Hi there...and welcome. The mix is excellent. Your background vocals are excellent...almost Diamond Rio-ish, and you're killing me (in a very good way) when you're singing in the upper register. My only 2 criticisms (since we HAVE to have some :D), would be the piano sound...it's really thin on this end. The other thing is that when you're singing lower, you tend to move around a lot with your vocal, and I'm hearing some (very slight) intonation problems that aren't there when you're belting it out. It's hard to describe, but to someone that's never heard you before, it's almost like you're indecisive when singing lower.

Again, those are nit picks...overall, this is excellent.

Let us hear more soon.
Chris

Welcome...............always good to get some new talent.........

Don't really have much to say about the mix as it's fairly good and I'm not much of a nit-picker. If this is your early recording stuff; it'll be cool to hear your future stuff as you learn and grow.

Good lord. Great sound on everything (except the piano:D :D). Where you at in Tennessee? My family is in the Clarksville area.

Clarksville? Really? In the mid 70s a road band I was in out of Macon used to play a place called the Palms in Clarksville. It's probably gone now but Jimi Hendrix used to jam there when hr was stationed at Fort Campbell. Another place we used to play was the Diamond Horseshoe. I'm sure that place is gone.

I'm actually in Franklin (about 20 miles S. of Nashville for those not familiar with the area). :)

Thanks for all the wonderful feedback folks :D

I have heard the comment about the piano once before. Might be worth another remix. I think I was going nuts with some the EQ's a little. The original sample (from the XP-50) seemed a little dull so I was trying to give it a little sparkle. May have overdone the sparkle ;). I guess that's what I get for mixing through my puter speakers ;) :D *Jagular checks his wish list and sees powered near field monitors fairly high on it, but still oh, so out of reach :(. I will also re-listen to the vox for the suggestion Chris made. Can't hurt throwing a few more lead vocal tracks down and doing some picking & choosing :D (God I love digital recording :D)

Anyway, thanks again for the warm welcome. I think I'm gonna like it around here. You guys rock!!!

this is fricken awesome!
I wish I could get a mix like this.. What do you mean your not a musician... this is all you right? Christ, you should be making some dough.

This is a great song too.. Bass sounds killer.

You rock man.

Yeah, all me. It's just not easy. No 1.5 hour mixes for me :D

The base is a standard sample from my XP-50 with some EQ and the BBE sonic maximizer plug in. That definitely gave it a little life. It was quite dead before the maximizer :D

Thanks man :D

Killer tune.. I gotta agree with the lower register uncertainty.. well Good Luck (Like you need it) and WELCOME to the Board!

Obviously the company suits in Nashville have a serious cranial-anal inversion. I've heard that's caused by excessive AutoTune use.:D

You obviously have talent and a good voice.

Nice mix, too.

Welcome! :)

The world is getting smaller and smaller. I've played at the Palms many times. Ugly ass cinder block building on the Blvd. What a bucket of blood. I've seen many a G.I. get arrested in that parking lot.

hey man, i dont do this often but since your in the neighborhood...(yall can hang me later for spammin, but this is a once time thing).
This is a mile or so up the road from you on the franklin/nash border. Ask for Lin, tell him KB gave you the #...

another "chrisharris"

...now just insult jamal non-stop, and we wouldn't be able to tell the difference :)

(compliment, BTW)... Country muzik... good stuff; why did "Charlie Rich" come to mind? I've NEVER heard Charlie Rich. Lord, just rambling.

Good recording... actually reminds me of crawdad's stuff too; now THAT's a real compliment. Yeah... the piano ain't winnin' no contest soundwise... but it fits well when the vocals are over it. In the intro, it's kind of "thin"... THAT'S the only negative at this point. Everything else has tons of polish. Great arrangement.

You'll fit in well here... welcome.
