Ernie Ball Hybrid Slinky's. They have heavy bottom and light top strings. Rotosound RS66 Roundwounds on my basses

Wow, 8's? I can't stand 9's, I can't even feel the strings! Dare I ask why you use 8's?

i always buy singles from musicians friend... 13-54 with an unwound G (24 i believe)

yeah, i tune down and play rhythym rather heavy-handedly. tuned to E i used to use 11s

do you think breaking strings is part a person's playing style?? i play fairly hard and i've been playing for at least 10 years and have probably broke 5 strings.... maybe i'm just lucky.

that said, my vote is for elixers, both on acoustics and electrics.... they stay new sounding the longest and play well. They are pricy but they lat me longer so its worth it. Can't get back to a big city to pick up new ones that often....

>>Dean Markley Extra Light 8's

Sounds like an old brand of cigarettes to me.

"For that smooth, strong flavor of only the finest tobacco, try Dean Markley Extra Light 8's. You'll be glad you did!"

I'd say there's 3 factors: Playing style, guitar (e.g., a bridge that needs to be filed down) and the strings themselves.

Style can definitely be a big factor. A buddy of mine is always breaking strings on his acoustic...it doesn't matter which guitar, and it's always in a performance when the adrenalin's going, not practice. I suggested he try the elixers, which he did, and on the first song, he broke a string. When he thinks about backing off on his strumming, he doesn't break them.

they should make special guitars that can hold special stings that come one spools. If the sting breaks you just unwrap some more sting from the spool. I just hate changing stings with a passion :)

 Hmmm....apply weedeater technology to guitars - when your string breaks, just bang the end of the guitar on the ground to refeed the string.

The kind of strings we use? Well the things some people make up to keep us going, it is.......Well of course no one tells us to respond, so I'll do it anyway so here we go, had to do some reseach for this one I am do not always know the type, no problems with brands but just EJ whatever numbers they use for these lovely pieces of steel.......

For Acoustic Steelstring:

# D'addaario EJ11 Bronze Light, hard to get hold of, the shop had to order them, but they are verrrry good, nice feel, and the bottom line: They last a long time.
# Ernie Ball Earthwoods Medium Light [and of course Bronze, where else do you get your brightness from?] They feel good and last a long time as well.
# Elixer [you knew I had to come up with the coated ones eh?] I really like them, and they do last but also sound very, very bright, so if that is not your thing than perhaps give them a miss......
# Martin SP's Bronze Light, as mentioned by more of you, yes they are good, bright in sound and they also last.

For NylonString I use D'addario Pro Arte EJ46 Hard Tension, good, not cheap, but then anything in this musicworld is not cheap [yes they know how to milk us eh?]

For Bass I use Fender Superbass 45-110 and the low E of this set is taperwound, you will found these strings on all new USA FenderBasses, again they where not so easy to get hold of [but I am living in the UK so Amerika may have a different story to tell....?] Bye the way these strings do sound bright and I use them mainly for the P-bass, for the Jazz I use the Rotowounds 45-105 which are much darker.

And what do I use for electric? As so many of you: Earnie Balls, I go for 011's with a 046 and 056 at the bottom for more beef and potatoes.

Generally I will use a lighter set of strings on a dark sounding gtr. whereas as brigher one will get a heavier set of strings. I swap gauges all the time, also when I record, I try to listen ahead of what the gtr. will sound like in the final mix [ I have to as I still work with only 4tracks available....] and if I feel things will get to muddy, then I use lighter strings on the gtr. Changing strings forever? Yes, well I guess that is part of the deal of playing gtr. Also I will play instruments with different gauges, so my fingers are flexable and do not really hurt a lot when I go up in gauge....it is all so simple but seem to make sense to me.

So what could our next thread be like? What plectrums? Colour our.....hey I have to say to all of you I really dig this site, it is fun, entertaining and informing all at the same time, and we also seem to respect each other's points, which is great.

Eddie :)

from my experience different kinds of strings work better with each guitar, d'addarios sounded better on my old rg after experimenting for a long time, but now I'm finding that the ernie balls sound better on my noodles signature (but then again, what wouldnt sound great on this guitar :D )

Just for something different - Rotosound 12 or 13s Bronzed on my acoustic. Wish I ain't found 'em though. I haven't been able to find them since in Australia.

Justy trying some new stuff. Been going with cheap Martin's for my acoustic and just switched to SP 13's. Also changing my electric strings from d'addario nickel to flatwound 11's on my Heritage h535. I like the nickel strings on my JB player strat copy.

For Electric:

GHS 12,15,18
Ernie Ball 32,42,52

My actual favs are the new Gibson Vintage Tone 11's. If I am going to be in standard tuning these are what I go with. They simply sound awsome and the tone doesnt peak for about 2 weeks, in my experience. They also dont corrode nearly as much as Ernie plain strings do. GHS is the best compromise and the only singles I can find in the gauge I prefer other than Ernie.

Someone working for Gibson please start selling singles and/or sets bigger than 11!!!!

Has anyone ever tried a generic string? Like Musicians Friend Brand for example? They are $2 a set and I am wondering what they'd be like?

toughy

for acoustic, I use elixer nanoweb most of the time, but it is irritating how often they break. Ernie Balls I thought were cool, for the first 15 minutes, then I gradually realized how much I just got screwed out of 8 bucks. electric, D'addario XP's

Elixer super slinky. the medium+ guage ones are impossible to manipulate.
