What kind of drum setups are you guys using? Also how are you recording them? Just curious. :)

I'm using:

Drums:

Yamaha Mid-Late Sixties setup in a Red and Black Onyx wrap
14x20 Bass Drum
5x14 Snare Drum
8x12 Rack Tom
14x14 Floor Tom

Cymbals:

14" Sabian AA Regular Hats
18" Zildjian A 18" Thin Crash
20" Sabian AAX Dry Ride
20" Vintage Paiste Crash ( unknown line )

HA, I forgot the recording part...

Oh Yeah,

I'm recording them with SM57 on snare, SM58 on kick (with hopefully an Audix D4 or something soon) and hopefully soon some of Audix's better quality overheads. This is going into a Behringer mixer, and then into a BOSS BR-532. Later, we'll dump the card onto a computer and mix (levels anyway) in Audio Studio 5. (Yes. I know, not the greatest process you've ever heard of)

As a longtime reader and short-time member I already know what most of you think about Behringers. Spare me. Haha, J/k. We're not looking for proffessional quality (which is good, cause I don't want to be dissappointed). Just something to sell at shows and such. Anyway, There it is. Please share.

Pearl Session Custom (Newer all maple line) in Vintage Fade:

8x10 tom
9x12 tom
16x16 floor tom
18x22 kick
5x14 chad smith signature snare
5 1/2 x 14 slingerland maple snare

Sabian cymbals (rotated through as needed):

8" AA splash
13" AA regular hats
16" AA thin crash
16" AAX stage crash
17" AA thin crash
18" AA stage crash
18" Wuhan china
20" AA rock ride

Mics:

Beta 52 on kick
SM57 on snare
Shure PG56 on toms (used to fill in here and there)
MXL603's on overheads

These all go straight into a Fostex VF160 although I'll soon be getting some sort of good 2 channel pre for the overheads. The recording side of things is still slowly being pieced together.
:)

cool setup man, you like the sessions? I love those 18x22 kicks man. We had a DW in a Black Velvet finish (at least I'm pretty sure that's what the finish was called) at work(drum headquarters). And I loved the huge fat bottom end we got out of it. I wish I could try to get an 18x22 to match my kit but it'd be pretty difficult. Dang the sixties! Hehe. Thanks for sharing.

DW Custom Natural Satin Finish (All Maple):

10x12 Rack Tom
16x16 Floor Tom
18x20 Bass Drum
5.5x14 Snare Drum
13" Pearl Maple Piccolo Snare

Cymbals:

Zildjian A Custom 14" Hi Hats
Zildjian A Custom 15" Crash
Zildjian A Custom 18" Crash
Zildjian A 20" Deep Ride
Sabian B8 8" Splash

I use a Sennheiser MD 421-II on the kick, Oktava MC012's for overheads, and 57's all around on toms and snare. I used to go through my Soundcraft SX mixer into a Boss BR8, but I finally got my new computer with a Delta 1010, so now its the soundcraft board through the delta. I actually haven't tried out the delta setup yet, but hopefully I will soon.

through an Alesis Studio 24 board to a DA38

What finish is your Jazz Festival zbert? I got to work on a champagne sparkle version the other day at drum headquarters. Them are mighty spiffy snare drums. :)

1 32" Paiste Gong

3 ddrums (connected to a ddrum RACK system)
4 "LP spike" type of triggers that I built.
(They work better than the LP spikes did.I'm using a DM5 as a TMI to trigger Symphonic Chimes from a Synth.)

All Pearl double-braced Hardware.
Axis Longboard "A" pedals.

Clear Pinstripes on the tops.
Clear Diplomats on the Bottoms.
Kick Resonant Is a solid smooth white Emperor...No holes in the kick heads.
The ddrums have Black Ambassdors on them.

I also have 7 CHROME Remo Rototoms, which I break out as mounted toms if I'm doing anything that requires a ton of IronMaiden and/or Peart types of tom rolls.

For accoustic drums I normally use a 5 piece Premier Genista (Birch) with a 20" x 16" kick and 10", 12" & 14" toms (I prefer smaller sized drums for recording). I will often substitute Maple toms (from a Mapex ProS Limited kit) with 10', 12', 14' 16' sizes.

I have about a dozen snare drums to choose from (wood, steel and brass) but I tend to try the wood drums first. My favorite is a 14"x 6" Maple (Pearl from the mid 80's). For cymbals, I have about 30 assorted cymbals (Zildian, Sabian, Paiste & Wuhan).

However, I rarely use the accoustics in my studio (I use them when I do sessions at other studios)

In my own project studio I use a set of Roland V-Drums with a Roland SPD6 and a Drumkat MIDI'd to the TD10 brain (for a total of 34 triggers). In addition to the TD10 I often trigger sounds from an Alesis D4, a Roland MBD-1 or a Sequencial TOM.

I record the MIDI performance (into Cakewalk 9.0) and later decide what sounds to use. When I do commt to sounds they are mixed through a Mackie 1604 (normally to DAT).

I don't have a great sounding room for drums (which is the main reason I use the e-drums). I have tracked drums at my place, but it takes some work to get decent sounds.

If I do record real drums I normally used a CAD mic pack for the drums (an older set - can't remember the numbers) with some added SM57's. For overheads I normally use a set of AKG C3000 or a set of MLX67 for overhead.

Evans Genera Dry on batter side; Evans hazy snare-side on snare side
Tama Iron Cobra double pedal
various percussion goodies

my drum recording methods change frequently depending on what kind of sound I'm looking for.....also, I'm limited to only 4 tracks - so I normally go for more minimilast 'natural' sound

here's a typical set-up:

pair of rode nt3s or behringer ecm8000s (overheads)
sm57 on snare
audio technica sm58 clone on kick (this is my weak link)

recently, I recorded with a spaced pair of nt3s in front of kit, sm578 clone in kick, and ecm8000 over my left shoulder pointing at the snare. I was able to get a pretty good sound with this setup - ecm8000 picked up enough snare to not need a close mic...

I also have enough mics to close mic my toms...however, then I'm forced to submix with the overheads which leaves me unable to tweak just the overheads (normally like to boost high-end eq a bit and add some 'verb)

I do my recording into a delta44 into Cubase VST

Hey Tim, got a pic of your set? would love to see the monster.. thanx
