what are *you* monitoring with?

You know, I read a lot of critiques that are prefaced with "I'm listening on cheap cans" or "I'm listening on crappy PC speakers," etc. (I've done this too, by the way - late at night I have to use headphones a lot of times) and it occurs to me that really, I wonder whether our input is really worth much if we are monitoring the mixes on these kinds of systems.

I mean, we're already kind of one foot in the grave considering crappy old mp3 is generally the format of choice for listening (there's a big part of me that thinks posting anything below a 320 kps mp3 is just a waste of time, since even a good mix sounds like dookie on a 128 mp3).

So I'm wondering, what are *you* listening on? It would be instructive for me to get an idea of what everyone's using to monitor. I recently got a pair of Yorkville YSM1s.

What's yer setup folks?

Chris

Well it's about the ability to have a critic listen on the MP3's sent in this forum..

I have a Rotel RB-3 --> Tannoy Mx1's

- KRK V8's
- Yorkies/w Tannoy sub
- Radio Shack "full range?!?!" cubes (sorta like Auratones)

Yorkville YSM-1's, Paradigm Mini mk IIs, and some Bose Room Mates (these took the place of the Rat Shack Minimus 7s I was using for "Auratones").

I am running the sound from my computer through a Technics Stereo receiver SA 101 and listening to the output through two Peavey 15" monitors.

Videologic Sirocco's and Ministry Of Sound headphones

Event TR 8's

Kind of bummed because my song has been on here for almost 5 days now, and not one person gave me any feedback.....what's up with that. Are we judging a post by its title, or the postee? Sorry to change the subject. Back to your normal program.......

Yow, don't worry Jason. I'll take a listen right now.

If you don't get a single response and you fall off the first page, don't be afraid to give your post a bump to put you back on the front page.

Sometimes things fall through the cracks what with the volume of posts around here.

Oh, I'm using Event 20/20's. So far so good.

And....let's be honest about it, JasonBird & Khompewtur: your music is just plain WEIRD :D

No doubt, that is true. I just listened to Jay's jam and I think Jason lives in the apartment upstairs!

You know, it was a good idea, Groucho...but it makes sense to me that 99 % of the people who are going to respond to this are going to be those who actually have monitors. I mean, I'm on monitors 80% of the time, but I don't blast them at 3 a.m. any more than you do, lol.

HOWEVER, instead of being a drawback, I think it's one of the things that I like about the clinic. This came up in another thread, but ideally, people outside of this clinic will spin one of my tunes from time to time. When they do, they're probably gonna' be in their car, or on a boombox, or a walkman with cheapo speakers...whatever they're listening on, I can almost guarantee that it won't be in a sound treated room with a flat EQ, lol.

Triple M gives great feedback, and part of the reason he hears some stuff that others miss may be the increased treble response of crappy headphones, lol. But just b/c he's listening with a boosted top end doesn't mean that the farts aren't there.

BTW - Event PS something. I'll look later, lol...but in addition, I run the outs of my soundcard to a boombox now too...and yesterday, I hooked it all back up to my old JBLs, b/c they were better at alerting me to subsonic problems (they rattle, lol).

chrisharris beat me to it.

I think one of the great things about the board is that you get so many different sound systems used for reviews.

I will now begin to listen to my own mixes on my crappy headphones before I post them. They tell you things that good systems don't.

Don't get me wrong, crappy headphones are not sufficient by themselves. Not even close. There just one tool out of many that can help.

I'll tell you what, when my crappy headphones finally give out, I'm going out to Radio Shack and buy the cheapest set of headphones they have.

Yamaha MSP-10's. But when I listen to someone's song.... I almost always listen on my home stereo that I play store bought CD's on. (Unless I'm at work)
