ok, i'm gonna display some pictures here, and you guys try to guess exactly what this foam does. i'm hoping you can tell by their shapes and design.
my friend gave me a couple of these, and i haven't used them yet because i'm not sure of their purpose. i'm guessing they reduce reflections.
take a look, tell me what you think.
thanks,
rob

I am going to venture a guess that the primary function is absorbtion.

That is a brand of Absorption foam called Sonex(I believe) and has fairly good BROADBAND absorption down to about 250 hz. Depending on what you are trying to do with these panels, you can improve the overall absortion of this stuff by cutting it into smaller panels(12-14" square) and mounting it in a checkerboard pattern on your studio walls. This will provide a good start at diffusion as well. For earlyreflections at the side walls and ceiling over a console in a control room, use the full sheets. Have someone move a a small mirror around on the sidewalls while you sit in the engineering position. If you can see your monitors in the mirror, thats where you need absorption for early reflections. One other thing. There are many ways to mount this stuff, however, they make a spray adhesive specifically designed for mounting to thin plywood or other type panels. This makes it easier to mount to room surfaces. Of course, there are lots of other ways as well. Here is some info on it.

PS. DON"T let anyone tell you its for "SOUNDPROOFING"

thank you

wow! thank you so much. i need all the help i can get. very appreciated. i have about 6 of these things. i think i would use them for the monitors only, not so much for recording, since i record my guitar direct with a line 6 pod (keep quiet for my roomates). and i rarely add vocals to my songs. so i'll use em mostly for mixing!
thanks!

Nope...you're all wrong. That's just packing material. Lucky for you, I collect packing material. So, if you don't mind, just send it to my house and I'll take it off of your hands.
