I'm as big a Beatles fan as anyone. But, realistically, those recordings wouldn't make it past a record company's front door now. For the time, they were great and ahead of their time. But they wouldn't stand up to today's standards, with prominent drums,etc....

So, yes, you do need good equipment to make a great recording, along with the skill of knowing how to use that equipment.

Yeah I'm pretty sick of people still mentioning the beatles. If you wanna live up to 1964 standards, then yeah, the beatles made adequate recordings on primitive equipment. Were they better than other stuff from the same time period? Nope. This nostalgic love affair with them has to come to an end one of these days, and we'll all be much better for it.

Hehe....I don't think that's going to happen. They wrote and performed too many great songs. But I agree with the fact that it's stupid to use their recordings as an example of what anyone should be striving for now.

Yeah that's what I meant. I like their early bubble-gummy boy-band songs. I'm talking about putting them on some production pedestal. Ridiculous.
 
It's a fair point.
I'd certainly nod to the beatles and Martin in terms of what they did with the technology; They were ground breaking, at a point,
but there's no point referencing the production quality.

If anything, I'm sure they sacrificed quality in the process of layering and bouncing so many tracks, no?
I'm thinking Sgt. Peppers here.
 
I mean....look at what Sun Studios did with one mic and a band in a room. That's all you need!
 
I've definitely picked up some experience of 'the better the band sound, the less I have to work'.
It just is true.

Ah . . . well done!

The first song I ever played on guitar was "As Tears Go by". The second was "Rain". It was a pleasant surprise to see that reference to its lyrics, which I had nearly forgotten. It was the flipside of Paperback Writer.
 
Paperback Writer is a song that is freakin' HARD to do!

I was in a band back then with very good vocals. We did a lot of Manhatten Transfer for instance.
We NEVER did a decent job on Paperback Writer

The first song I learned on bass was "Rain". But not the Beatle one, the Status Quo one. Both are superb though. But only one of them has backwards vocals......
