I have learned all of this by trial and error. I use Audacity (free), and an at2020usb mic. I use audacitys compressor, and highpass eq. The vocals sit very nicely and I do it for free. Here are my steps.
I record the vocal
apply EQ, usually just boost the 2500-3000hz by a few Db. Then I cut anything below 350-400hz. This eliminates all the bass response and sits the vocal in the track.
Next I add alot of compression. start at 2:1, and add more until you feel it is sitting in the eq nicely. If you need the vocal to sit even more you can add a small reverb with some PRE-delay.
Thats it!

I like the phaser effect on the vocal for the verses, and the backing vocals are nice. Your EQ settings are for that particular mic, pre amp, and your voice rather than definite settings for any vocal recording. They are however good starting points.

I tend to leave the 3k area alone and boost 5k more so, but this works for you vocal/mic well.
