What are PLUGINS?

plugins for audio programs. I guess they are software FX, /compressors and equalizers? Or are they midi sounds? or both?

Can anyone explain them?

Basically that is the idea. A real (good) DAW is going to have built in effects and features but you will likely find you want more than what it offers. That is where the pluggins come in

Plugins are generally used in reference to effects. Though it is a catch-all term for VST/AU/DX etc programs that you open in your DAW, including instruments (or MIDI sounds).
