AW4416-preamps

So you're saying it DOES bypass the AW4416 pre's if you half way plug into the inputs?

That's exactly what I'm saying. Been doing it for years. In fact I've never used the AW4416's preamps unless I have an emergency or quality doesn't matter that much. I use a Mindprint Envoice channel strip and/or Presonus MP20 preamp instead. Much nicer.

Make sure you get the halfway thing right though... don't want them jumping out mid-take...

Cheers

i know this is now well off thread, but just to jump in on Armistace's bypassing the pre's using half jacking; if you want to guarantee that it'll work/don't fancy fiddling with making sure the jack is only half in, just using a standard "insert Y cable" and just using the return jack (sleeve) from the output of the external pre/channel strip. it may cost a little more than a standard jack cable but does mean you don't run the risk of knocking the cable out/extra fiddling.

We've been doing this at work for a long time now through a patch bay which has the sends and returns from the inserts on it. i don't have anything against the pre's on the desk (Soundcraft Ghost) but they sound quite boring imo

I really should do that, you know, I've been living dangerously with half-jacking for all these years... only occasionally do I stuff it up!

Also, Hosa IIRC makes a cable especially for connecting gear to the "return" side of an insert...
