What applications can I close

When I record I want to have the smallest number of processes running. With my XP now there are 28 processes running. Does anyone have a list of what can be shut down without making the OS unstable, but faster? I had but lost an internet site which listed all the usual application file names and what they were. Anyone have a URL for such a site?
