What am I doing wrong here?

Hi everyone-

Just wanted to say hello....although this is my first post, I've been lurking here forever!

Anyway, I just bought an audiophile 24/96 card, and I can't figure out how to set the damn thing up! And yes, I have read the manual :-) Here are a couple of the problems I am faced with:

1. When playing mp3's, if another sound happens on the computer, the mp3 pauses while the other sound is playing.

2. When trying to record using Cool Edit Pro 2.0, I am trying to get the metronome to play while I am recording, but it seems I have a loop or something, b/c it records all this really weird stuff.

Here's my setup as I have it right now:

input--->mixer(behringer 602a)---->rca (tape) out of mixer to rca in on soundcard----> rca out of soundcard to tape in on mixer

main out on mixer to speakers.

I can play sound on my computer, and I can listen through the headphones with the speakers off. So I think that is okay.

But how do I go about setting everything else up??? What settings to use in the m-audio mixer, what settings to use in cool edit pro....

Much thanks!

It appears you are creating a loop with your mixer-card config.
As far as the mp3 thing, I dont know away around it except to shut of system sounds when using the mp3 player.

could you be more specific about the loop problem? According to the manual that came with my mixer, I have the mixer setup properly in terms of wiring.

okay, I've seemed to have fixed the mp3 playback problem by using the monitor mixer function on the control panel. Now windows sounds and mp3's seem to be getting along!

But I still have the problem where the metronome is being recorded on my tracks in cool edit pro, with a strange delay.

All I want to be able to do is listen to the metronome using headphones while recording, since I'll be using microphones. That's why I have everything routed through the mixer. Is there any other way to hook this up instead of the way I have it written in my first post?

I may be misunderstanding you, but are you outputting your metronome to the mixer and then recording from the tape outs? If this is the case than you are not only recording the instrument that you are playing but you are also recording the metronome again, that may be your problem.

If this is what's happening, you have to try to find an output on the mixer that wont contain the metronome, like an aux send.

okay, so this is this setup you are suggesting:

-mic or line into my mixer to provide signal to be recorded (no problems here)

-aux send to rca in on soundcard

-rca out of soundcard to rca tape in on mixer

-main out to speakers

Okay, so it appears that this setup works (finally!).....just one more question from me in this thread:

By having my system set up in this manner, it eliminates the possibility of stereo mic'ing an acoustic guitar, right? If I'm not mistaken, the aux send of out the 602a mixer is mono, and that is being used to send the signal into my soundcard....thus meaning I can only record mono tracks. Is this correct?

Thanks a lot guys!
