I have a sub that hits 20Hz at +/- 3dB. The main point once you reach that frequency is more feeling the bass than hearing the bass. In fact, the manufacturer makes a sub that can be tuned to hit below 16Hz at +/-3dB.

Many recent DVDs hit those frequencies, including Monsters, Inc., Blade II, Lord of the Rings, etc.

Pipe organs can also hit those frequencies.

I am not very knowledgeable about frequencies, but I sing bass and I believe low C (2 down from Middle) is about 60 hz. Some bass singers can sing well below that. I think you have to be careful about rolling off low frequencies.

... Correct me if im wrong but middle C is 440.. one below that is 220, and one below that is only 110 ... if you could sing 3 down from middle C it would be 50hz ... so what ever

The audio spectrum ends for most of us at about 40-50 hz. Below that is subsonic, and can only be heard by a cockroach.

Though frequencies around do quickly degrade into rumble below 20Hz, humans can still hear frequencies to about 20Hz, sometimes lower. If you use a sine signal generator to produce a signal of about 20-30Hz, you will hear it, not just feel it, given that you input the signal into decent monitors or headphones.

If you do not believe me, go to any reputable source about sound perception and my assertions will be corroborated.

I remember when I first played my bass through my new SWR bass amp (4x10 with 4band semi- par EQ). Setting the lowest band to +15dB@31Hz didn't produce anything I heard, but it sure made the windows and floor rumble in a strange way :D

I love sub

[edit: forgot to mention it was a 5string dropped to low A :p ]

Well, anything with a bass guitar in it should do. The bottom E on a bass guitar is 41.25Hz -- or in the vicinity depending on how you like your scales temperated (or what ever it is called in english) -- and the bottom H, sorry B, on my very nice six string Pedulla Thunderbass is a little below 31Hz. Of course I very seldom play down there, and its especially useless in a small apartment or rehearsal room, but its there all right!
Humans not hearing below 40Hz is bullshit. Sure, most of what people think they are hearing down there in their crappy 5:1 home cinema setups is the distorsion from the subs. But that doesn't mean that we have to give up on our bottom octave! Reclaim the Sub-contra octave! (Or, again, what ever it is called in anglosaxon.)

ps. And don't let notation fool you. Bass is played one octave below what the notation would suggest. Unfortunately the little "8" that should be below the bass clef has fallen out somewhere along the way. Let a bass singer and a bass player - which I am both - sing and play in unison and you will see what happens.
