...
hi folks,

gettin ready to lay down some vocals,

just wandering how the backing track sounds,,,

i know there is slight clipping at parts caused by the bass, and ignore the whistle,,,,it's coming out,,

but other than that? any offers??

thanks all!

The drums sound kinda canned with no kick and the bass, a little muddy and could use some top end. Get the singing in there and you'll get more comments.

Just some notes:

Hypercompression -- Lower overall volume of mix to -2dB.

Guitars a little bright @ 1:00 min; lower volume a tad and maybe slice off a bit of hi end to taste.

Cymbal tap @ 1:00 min. mark a bit too bright and boxy.

For the first part of the arrangement, leading up to the 1 min. mark, mixing is good and sound is clean.

Horns at 32 sec. mark sound clean, well mixed and have good imaging.

thanks for that man! i'll get right on it!

wot dus your last point mean,,,,,the wee sorta guitar jabs? or the trumpetty sounding bits later in the tune?

cheers.

It could possibly be a guitar, but specifically the instrument that comes poking in at the 32 sec. -39 sec. mark.

The drums need some fattening up, the high hat seems a little to harsh at times.
I like the introducing of the electric guitar.
The bass could be boosted by a few db's to fatten the whole mix.

I would like to hear this with vocals, the overall mix is relatively clear and each instrument is audible.
Nice work!!

Gorty :)

This is interesting and I enjoyed listening to it... I like the whistle.

Ok, here are my comments... Mind you, I'm a bit on in years and have minimal skills.

I listened to this on both Yamaha NS10s and some AKG "M" series headphones.

The drums need attention. The closed HH is ok but the open HH is, uhmm.. not. Really look at how you are miking these. Do the open HH sounds of the kit really sound like that? Experiment with mic placement.
The snare is passable but would benefit from being tuned a bit tighter. Try micing the snare with two SM57's... one on the bottom and one on the top.
The kick needs some... well, kick. It needs a bit of boost around 60-80hz

The guitar volumes seem to move around a bit. This doesn't sound like dynamics to me... it sounds like a compressor was suddenly turned off?
Listen around 1:34. This kind of repeats itself several time.

At 1:13 there is a error made by the drummer that is distracting. (I've played drums since about age 5 and I'm still no good.!)

All in all, interesting and enjoyable. I would love to hear the vocals.

Thanks!

hey all!

first and foremost,,,,,,thank you very much for ALL your comments and advice,,,

i'm gona go out 2 nite and sort them all out.

just a few things though,,,,,,i'm not one of these guys who wont take criticism well,,,,,,but i don't hear the mistake in the drums,,,,

the only reason i'm askin about it, is cos the drums are obviously a live recording,,,,but its a few 10 second clips looped,

other than that,,,good call everyone,,,,i'll post an update later! :)
