Greetings,
Ok folks, this is a rant from a guy who has been exposed to so much information he is almost sure he understands it it all.
There are good deals on two channel preamps (ART Tube MP) and there are deals on PCI card converters like the Delta 44, 66, 1010 and so on.
Then you go the Aardvark Direct Pro 24/96 "all in one" systems with 4 preamps/converters.
Now I am wondering, after I drop a few grand on a top of the line computer (I plan to get all a good one to last a long time, I used my 486 for school up till 1 year ago- I mean, fast CDRW, fast DVD, large video monitor, good speaker moniters, and of course fast processor and mega ram, massive hard drives etc. etc.) which would last me a decade.
SOO, as my musical horizons expand, why would i limit myself to 4 channels? Even six is good, but in a live band situation, which I think is such a good way to record for songwriting purposes if not recording for CD. Nothing is better then having drums/guitars/mics setup and just plug in and record an hour of "messing around". Its amazing. So 4 channels for drums (I can't stand 2), 2 guitars, 1 bass, 1 vocal. The basics for potentially good music.
So the question is , what preamps and converters could a serious hobbiest look at for 8 channels I/O Preamped and Converted 24/96 (Maybe more reasonably 48)?
IS there anything thats affordable for a PC system? (Or even mac for that matter) Protools looks great, is that the only thing available because its All in One?
How much does a Lucid ADA8824 converter cost? 25,000$??
And is there a MAckie mixer that holds up the PreAmp end of the equation (8+ channels) that doesn't require a loan?
If nobody here knows, I swear I am going back to my high school days and recording through the mic hole in my tape recorder. I swear I will do it.
For the love of God, tell me the affordability brick wall does not end with 4-6 channels. I loved protools when I saw the demo video, but then I learned about all the possibilities here....it must continue into 8 channels from Mic to Hard Drive.
Doesn't it?
Humbly
