What about distribution?

Hi. So our band is making our first basic CD, 6 tracks, just something to sell if we play anywhere, or to mail to people for whatever reason. We go to record next week.

So I've been given the responsibility to find out who would be best/cheapest for CD duplication and distribution.

Disc Makers seems popular for duplication, what do you think? We only need a small sample, maybe 100 to start, so low orders, jewel cases, sleeve, CD and covert art.
Anybody cheaper that is just as good? How good are their templates for cover art? Anybody use them?

And for distribution, we want to hit all the digital sales sites, Rhapsody, Napster, iTunes, Amazon, etc... And the popular site I like is cdbaby. Cheap signup, decent cut on sales, and they can do physical CDs distribution as well as digital. Anybody have experience with them? Anybody better/cheaper/larger distribution?

CDBaby doesn't own your stuff, so if we did ever get a label, we just quit cdbaby and move our stuff, so it seems pretty cut and dry.

Any suggestions for a new band to get duplication and distribution quickly and cheaply and fairly? In these days of Internet marketing, is it even worth it to try and get a label? Or should we concentrate on trying to sell our own stuff for maximum profits and go indy?

Thanks

discmakers does seem like the standard for duplication... i've used them before. i've heard a lot of good things about cdbaby.

I checked out the site and they do seem good.

As far as the template goes all it is basically is a file so that your cd art will have the right dimensions. I dont see any sort of graphic template. This means you still have to design everything yourself.. not only that but they need a specific kind of file (photoshop won't do it).

PM me if you're interested in cd art created for you.. we could definately work something out i'm sure :)

Yes we want CD art but not necessarily a full production type of retail thing. This is more or less a demo CD, although it will be sold whenever we do a gig. So we are thinking simplistic and to the point, not a lot of fluff.

In any case, if we buy 100 CDs with color inserts for $185, that is less than $2 per CD, which seems alright to me.

www.kunaki.com is an even cheaper option I think, and its pretty simplistic, no fancy booklet.
I plan on using them on the next project.

yes i've used kunaki before with great results. it's the same thing though you get your insert (2 panels) and the back.. i think it came up to 1.60 per cd and I got my cd's within a week of ordering.

edit: oh sorry 1.75 and you can order 1 cd if you want.. doesn't matter how many
