Reel deep thoughts...
So I've recently been indoctrinated into this whole satellite "radio" thing...I've known what it is and all that, just never had a vehicle with it or felt the need to buy a peripheral that supports and so on...but one of the vehicles at work has it so I tried it out. What a neat idea, all the offerings and having them categorized and grouped by style or format. I listened to "50's on 5" for a good long time today but...

ARG the data compression artifacts are HORRIBLE!!

Like my ears are full of fluid! :drunk:

Don't you love the tizzy, swishy highs, wimpy lows and generally flat and undefined, unrefined mp3 kwality sound :drunk:

Made for the masses not for audiophiles

Thing is, I can't understand why the jingle-jangle-warble of low bit-rate data compressed audio is acceptable to the masses. Its just...awful!

Krunchy.
They have done tests and found younger people who have grown up with mp3s prefer that sound.
Earbuds.

I had a rental car that had XM radio in it. I found one or two stations that had an awesome library, but the sound was like 64kbps mp3s or something. Horrible. I've noticed that the regular FM radio is sounding the same way since most of them have gone to "HD" radio. What a load of crap.

Once you've gone digital you can't go back.

If they would just make the effort to churn out Hi-Q audio streams...it would be pretty good, but most opt for the lower bit-rates...and it is amazing how the public accepts that horrible audio quality....and even PAYS for it! :laughings:

I don't bother with satellite radio...and if I listen to streams on the internet...I won't listen to any that are very low bit-rates, of course, the higher ones tend to drop out constantly due to Internet bandwidth issues...but that shouldn't be an issue with satellite radio.

I know where you guys are coming from. I dropped mine when the 2 were combined. The 50's ststion went from good ol' R&R to wimpy Fabien rubbish.

Yep, first thing I noticed about satellite radio is it hurt my ears. I can’t listen to it for long. First person I knew that got it is one of my lifetime best friends with a huge vinyl collection. We both noticed the harshness in the sound right away. But lately I’m noticing local FM stations are sounding worse than ever with very shrill digital artifacts after announcing equipment “Upgrades.” Everyone is changing over to digital crap as the old equipment is retired. Sonically speaking, the music scene has been screwed for a while now and it’s only getting screwier. Soon I’ll be restoring old car cassette decks so I can even listen to music. The sound of one of my local FM stations changed so much for the worse overnight I called and asked them what the hell they did. "Upgrade."

:drunk:

I wonder what it would take to buy the "old" equipment and set up a station. I've heard that some of the components have been modified for the digital transmissions, but I would imagine that there are still a good number of untainted pieces out there to work with.

I know it's highly theoretical, but AFAIK, analog transmissions are still allowed in the FM range. I know nothing of the amplifiers, repeaters, and antennae to run such a thing, but I do know some people who might.

Consider this food for thought. LOL

I know a place where we could buy cart machines consoles and just about everything else to put a station together. It would be kind of cool.

The air is all digital now though. I don't know how you'll broadcast in analog. :D ;)
