Alright, I have this MOTU 896 thing and I'm trying to use it with my sonar software. I waited forever to save up for this stuff. I then had to wait for it's delivery. Now that I do finaly have it, it has become incredibly disapointing that despite the maunual's help I cannnot get this thing to work. Am I merely dence, or does my system and or setup have a unique problem not discussed in the manual? I didn't really post this looking for help, so much as I just wanted to vent. Well, how about you guys. Anybody hook up a bad ass MOTU 896 to some software and have it work. Does it rock your socks? Oh, please let me know! For it is my fear that I may never know for myself.

a bud of mine has this Motu guy up and working smooth with Sonar, exactly what type of problems are you having?

Well, occasionaly it'll work. I've even recorded for very short periods of time. But usualy my computer will tell me that my Motu device is already in use (what the hell is using it, no other software is running?), or it won't monitor correctly. It's just incredibly buggy, my computer will usualy freeze. On the Motu manual in the list for system requirements it lists:

Windows ME, Windows 2000, Windows XP

I have Windows 98. Perhaps if I used an operating system listed in the Motu requirments area this would work better. I suspect it's not so much a conflict with software as it is with the operating system.

irony - I think you probably answered your own question. My guess is the problem is with the drivers. They probably were not written to work with Win98.

Drivers for a sound card are almost as important as the card itself (maybe more so, in some cases).

It probably would help your cause to move to a newer OS. However, make sure that you can obtain drivers for all your other existing hardware that will work with the new OS.

Yeah, if you're running Windows 98 and you are trying to use WDM drivers, you might be having troubles. Getting those drivers to run correctly in Windows 98 has been problematic enough that most manufacturers pretend that they don't provide Windows 98 WDM drivers. There's some sort of hotfix update at Microsoft's website but it's pretty hard to find. Personally, I've stayed away since I don't really need the super-low latency they offer for my purposes, so I figured I'd just wait until I upgrade to XP sometime in the next few months...

Oh, that's Windows 98 SE you have, right, not the original one? That could also be an issue as the older version doesn't support WDM at all.

Irony,

> my computer will tell me that my Motu device is already in use <

A friend of mine has a MOTU 324 and Windows 98, and he had the same problem with Sonar. If you have the MOTU control panel open, then it is "using" the device. The solution is simple: in Sonar's Audio Options dialog is a checkbox to allowing sharing audio devices. Make sure that is enabled.

Also, be sure you have the latest drivers from the MOTU site. Remember, MOTU is primarily a Mac-oriented company, so Windows driver are probably a lower priority for their developers. The same friend mentioned above had quite a few problems with his MOTU card, but when new drivers (eventually) appeared on the MOTU site, they fixed the problems.

MOTU drivers are rock solid under Win2k or WinXP. I am working a project with a guy using this config right now, he's never had a glitch that I've seen in dozens of recording hours.
