After much deliberation, I have decided to hijack this forum, and turn it in to my own.

I am the dictator here. We go under my rules. There is no democracy.

You ask me questions. I answer them.

That's how this forum works from now on.

Ummm, hmmm.

OK:

Will there ever be a viable method of internet distribution for independent artists, or will the youth of the world continue to illegally download major label drivel?

I can answer that one Vestast- everything about Britney is fake. The hooters are just part of the package.-Richie

How much longer do you think "major labels" will survive?

I believe thier is a quantum shift underfoot, and the destruction of the music industry that has happened over the past fifty years by the record labels is coming to an end. Why do you think the RIAA is so scared? Know, I know this flys in the face of many peoples beliefs on here. And, I am NOT saying music should be free or any crap like that, but I do believe the record companies are making a killing when most true artists aren't seeing shit. Hopefully, very soon, small studios with small "artists" will be able to produce superior work, distribbute it soley in the digital domain, charge a nominal fee ($2-3 per album) and entirely cut out the record companies. It will take some time, but I do believe it will happen. Most young people I know, have already stopped with the "major label drivel", they are always on the lokout for an underground band. Music is art - I think the recording industry for the most part has forgotten that.

Really, all it would take is for a few MAJOR acts to skip their next record deal, pay for their own studio time, and make a BIG DEAL about realeasing their next album for download on their website for $5 at full CD specs. (16/44.1).

ps- and, the CD is dead ya know....haven't used one in my house for over a year (except to rip into the jukebox), truck is up next....

All hail the grand exalted dictator of the Chessrock forum!

That's what I thought !

Alright guys . . .

The answer to all of your questions:

It depends.

He he. Britney: Real, but enhanced.

Music Industry: It's a new technology . . . new phase of music . . . lots of changes happening at once. It will take time for everything to sort itself out, but be patient. :D Eventually "Indie" artists will become mainstream . . . then they won't be indie any more. Same thing happened in the early nineties when alternative music became mainstream. Give it time, and things will come around. People's tastes change.

Next question ?

Shouldn't every sentence written by anybody other than chessrock be a question? So how come other people were answering questions here? Is there some way you can punish them?

OK, well tell me this then, why am I such a dumbass?

Look guys, I'm the dictator around here . . .

And I've decided that Anarchy rules, okay?

So if you don't listen to me, then you are, in a sense obeying me. :D No one listens to me anyway, so what's new? :D

I disagree that this will happen. Truth is, these big labels just work better. If you're in a popping band, wouldn't you want to sign up with a mammoth record company? Because here's what they offer - instant access to all areas of the market; nearly infinite financing and publicity; legal teams; marketing; etc...

The marketplace will continue to change as it always does and has, but you can be sure, that in the interest of remaining profitable (which is the goal of every record company and musical artist), that the record companies will position themselves strategically for any/all market changes.

whether or not artists are getting ripped off is a seperate debate. it's all dependent upon the negotiating..and you can't negotiate unless you have leverage...and the only way to have leverage is to already be a proven success.

Actually, I believe that the main goal of record companies is money. Any ARTIST I have ever met wasn't in it for the money. The wanted there art to be seen/heard. Fame maybe, money no. Now don't take that to mean they wouldn't be happy with the money, but that was not the goal.

All the services that the record companies currently provide will be uneccessary. They will become merely a promotional vehicle, which will also not be completley neccessary either. With the advent of the internet, WOM has become a VERY POWERFUL force. (Did you see the guys auction selling the wedding dress - 2.5 MILLION hits all via WOM - There another playstation one that is already at 1/2 Million via WOM)

When nearly everyone has broadband, nobody will buy CD's - no more manufacturing/warehousing/distro/B&M Record stores. I really believe that VERY few people have envisioned the true power of the internet. Look at the open source movement, it will change everything in the software arena as well. There are piss ant programmers that are now FAMOUS for writing a mod to a program from thier basement that spread like wildfire. It will be the same with music.

It's already begun. Most people are still unaware, but it takes time...heck, it may even take 20 years, but the record company is dead - they know it too.

ps - I do believe that there will be many small independent companies that promote/distribute music via the web, but the major labels will not survive in their current "glory".

What you should do is direct these questions to the clerk working at your local Guitar Center.

These guys are paid experts in their field, and vigorously well-trained to answer such audio-related questions.
