Weird Song ...

Good bottom end piano sound.
Drums sit fine.
Flutes are a bit forward at intro.
Can't say I'm too fussed on the tempo change - I mean I understand the need but it went from Floydian into mid tempo AOR.
When it returns to the piano slow temp the synth doesn't sound as cool as the guitar.
Try an edit without the uptempo sections OR drop the jaunty bass part for something more sombre.
Truthfully I kept waiting for the return of the non jaunuty sections even the rhythm at 5.10 is too up & the horn synth doesn't fit anywhere. Maybe excise some of the beats from the bass & drums & all the horns. some distortion after 6.20 too.
I think you've tried to please too many masters.
Jsut the guitar wig out without the again happy dancy beat would have been a cool ending.
Sorry but then again - it's just me & I'm perverse I guess.
Some great recording & playing & I REALLY dig the slow sections.
Use your name & apply some dub mixing techniques perhaps.
Cheers

You're the second, as of late, who has lobbied for removing the uptempo sections ... thinking them "out of sync" w/ the rest of the song. They thought the inclusion of the end solos were needed though.

I don't disagree with any comments, I only listen. Lately I have been thinking there are too many notes/rhythms in the uptempo parts ... which lend a certain "frenetic" feel that is absent from the other sections.

This is why I 'live' with songs, particularly complex ones, for a long period before I settle on a final arrangement.

Thanks for your input Ray!

Aha! The groundswell has started....

The public have decided. We know what we want. Are you prepared to let us have it? :)

RayC/B.H. - Perchance that you folks check back w/ this. I simplified the chorus sections ... swapping out the prior "busy bass" parts for something less cluttered.

Your comments, amongst others, indicated that the transition between sections wasn't working well, and I began to wonder if all of a sudden you had this serene section followed by a furious chorus ... that didn't blend well.

This was the first time (in multiple places) where that same comment arose (B.H. mentioned the same thing -- take out the chorus completely -- on the "other" board) ... and such remarks started after I added the bass line. I wondered if there was just too much counter-rhythms at work ... and it made the two parts sound incongruous (mellow vs frenetic) next to each other.

So I simplified, simplified, simplified the bass in order to try to soften the contrast and glue the two parts together more seemlessly.

Does the new bass parts in the chorus sections work better?

Thanks!

Listening to the revision NOW on headphones.
There's a little sense of Talk Talk to it now - the piano bass mostly but also the melody really shines through & there's isn't the clutter.
The change has come - I think you've nailed it cobber. the bass is still interesting But you are right it isn't fighting with anything for aural or ideas space.
NOW may I save this streamed temp file? The song is that good & it's something I'll listen to since the revision
- it's pathetic how little things make stuff difficult for me to listen to -
this is ACE in fact I was just telling my wife how good it is.
I'm pleased you didn't bow down either - I noted the horns still in there etc. GOOD it's your music after all. I'm just a flog who had a whinge.
TOP EFFORT.
I'm really happy having heard the difference you've made to your work - it really comes through.
Cheers & well done!

I like the vocal a lot, and the guitars also. :)

The drumset, especially the snare, and the piano sound are less effective IMO.

Hey, interesting ending. I like it.

Thanks Tim!

Yeah ... I've had a dickins of a time trying to dial in the right drum/particularly snare sound.

This mix still has some fine tuning needed, but at least I think I'm closing in on things.

It's been a long and complex ride w/ this one.

I'm glad you liked the ending, it's my favorite part of the song too.

Best,

I definitly dig the slow sections. Not as crazy about the up tempo stuff as previous posters had mentioned. But real sweet groove on the slower stuff.

Good job!

Hi Cincy- Thanks for commenting. The uptempo section has been a challenge -- largely due to working w/in the technological confines of music via the internet and DAW.

The trouble starts when the tempo grid is chosen -- and this one starts at 70bpm during the verses, jumps to 90bpm during the chorus and closes out at 80bpm for the end solos. Having done this "live" in a band, all the musicians instinctually move together through the changes when playing this ... but since such synergy in unison isn't possible via the net (since "the band" isn't playing all together), tradeoffs w/ tempo grids occur.

I'm still working on trying to bind the elements a little more seemlessly -- and I think I am getting closer. RayC gave me good clues above -- so this version's chorus has been significantly made "less busy" ... which softened the contrast between the sections ... blending them better. I'll keep at it.

Hi BriefcasemanX- I'm glad you enjoyed it. Such comments help me to know that at least I'm in the right neighborhood with things.

Best,

Kev-
