As someone who occasionally runs live sound for bands, I’m going to have to go with in-ears. Especially for vocalists or bands who have hard-hitting drummers.
I was talking to a mons engineer last month who said he did a silent disco with the band he was with. Had an electric kit with in-ear mons and amp modelling on the guitars. All you could hear on stage was the thwacking of the electric kit!
not if you turn your pack all the way up! our drummer has his pack usually on 9 almost every night, it is absolutely ridiculous, while i have mine barely past 3.5. i see advantages of wedges and in ears, but we also have a dedicated monitor engineer so for us ears are much easier. personally my favorite combo is in ears, and then kick and bass through the side fills, so i can hear everything perfectly in my mix but also feel it which is a huge must for me. nothing takes the rock out of a show like not being able to feel the music.
