Yup, I know the quality is really bad. Don't blame me, well actually do blame me I guess it's my fault :)

The main thing is I wanna know what you think of it composition wise, because frankly I aint gonna make a good sounding song until I stop recording straight in :) Still I think the tune is kinda nice :)

Hope you like it :)
10 points to anyone who can have more smileys in their post than mine :)

Enjoy :)

It takes a little while, but we're coming...

I blame you for the quality;) but as far as writing and playing it's pretty good. I listened a few times. It grows on me. It's dark and depressing, but I'm sure that's what you're going for, and you did it well.

I know you're probably going for a blurred kind of feel with the vocals, but you could probably announciate (sp?- what I mean is speak clearer) a little more and still have the blurred dreary feel. It might be a little much as it is.

I like that you still put multiple geetar parts and harmonies and other stuff even though it sounds like you're limited on gear. You did a good job considering. Cool harmonies.

Yeah the quality is poor. It is meant to be dark, but I don't really think its THAT dark :) I'm a happy guy :D

I could probably make the vocals clearer, I found a better technique since recording so I might re-do em.

Anyway thanks for your comments. I know what to do next time :)

I`m listening to this right now. Ok, its finished.. You did a great job gettin the guitar micing squared away and gettin the vocal tracked. The bg vocals need to come up more for me. I`d back off the primary vocal a little and brighten it just a tad, and as fprod said sing a little clearer. The synth patch is playing a good part, you could add the low strings to support it a little more. I was hearing another guitar track but it wasnt that intelligable.

Hehe, yeah production is a problem. I really basically need a decent preamp and mixer etc.

Gotta go out talk more about it later :)

Hey man...I'm not gonna' bitch too much about the production, b/c you've done that, lol. I'll say that I thought the production ideas were cool...just about the time I was thinking, "This would be cool with some cello and synths," there they were.

I actually like the melody a lot...that's 90% of the game. I don't know what you listen to, but I hear this full on production with kind of a Smashing Pumpkins vibe.

BTW - 2 things that will (I think) immediately help this (or any other) recording sound bigger are mic'ing the guitar and using some ridiculously deep reverb with a well-timed predelay on the vocal.

There's a glitch in one or more of the tracks somewhere near the end (don't have the marker), but it sounds almost like an old cassette got caught in the reels and got all crinkled up (2:38-2:40).

BTW - what's up with that file name? lol...it looks kinda' like binary code, but there are 9's and 7's and stuff in there, lol.

Post Lots,
Chris

Chris - It's ironic but I don't actually like the pumpkins. Lol. Anyway, You reckon it would sound better micing the guitar rather than using the preamp? (It's a semiacoustic). I'll have a look at using reverb on the vocals, but I wouldn't have thought very deep :) I'll see though.

And the glitch is actually because I can't sing very high, and my voice was shaking on one or two of the harmonies. Something to sort :)

The filename is the name they give to it. It's a pain to have to type it out :D

Always...I've got this Takamine elec/acoustic that I gig with that sounds like ABSOLUTE ASS when I'm just playing it in my house...and as thin as that guitar is, it STILL sounds about 1000 times better mic'd for recordings than DI'd.

I'm kind of a purist when it comes to acoustic guits, though...soooooo... The important thing is that YOU like the sound of it; I just think 9 times out of 10, people end up liking the sound of their acoustic better when they mic it, and it definitely adds some space to the mix.

Hmm I'll have a go but I think it sounds good when I sort out the tone (the tone was bad on that song). We'll see :) Any other comments? :D

Speaking strictly on the songwriting...

Generally the music was ok I thought. I liked the strings, and the guitar parts. The melody was ok. The vocals were a little muffled and low so I couldn't hear enough of the words to comment on the lyrics.

It sounds a bit like you recorded this with someone sleeping in the other room (sssssshhh, quiet...don't make any noise) :)

It probably sounds a lot better if you sing it just a tad louder...(no, you don't have to scream...that would ruin the mood) :)

Good song, I say: work on it! I hear some Radiohead in it, maybe try something in that direction? Arrangement- and soundwise I mean?

Obviously production is gonna be bad, and unfortunately that has caused the song to sound a bit bad, but it's nice to hear feedback from what you CAN hear :)

TripleM: Yup, I need to make the vocals louder

Pedullist: Thanks :) Yeah I'm not sure if I recorded it at night time but I might have done ;) I'll make it louder next time. Radiohead is certainly one of my influences :D

Very dark. Reminded me of Something In The Way by Nirvana (from the album In Utero).
The strings are a nice touch. But then again: they're almost mandatory in songs like these. :)

Something in the way is on the album Nevermind ;) (I'm a massive fan of theirs :)). Anyway yeah I guess it's kinda dark but the lyrics aren't particularly. Ah well :)

Oops, shit. You're right. I got them both and I just checked. Feeling stupid now.

Hey, I'm dutch. English lyrics don't mean that much to me ;)

Hehe fair enough ;)

"Something in the way.... Ohhhh ohhhh".

Soooooo what would you lot say I got to improve the recording quality. I don't really know how much ProTools help you, or a preamp or whatever. I'm the nub of the nub :)

Why don't you tell us how you're recording...mic's, DAW, etc.

Oh, and mic the damned acoustic, lmao :D

Basically, for the guitar, straight through into the computer Line-In and recorded straight into cakewalk. For the mic, pretty much the same, straight in the Line-in and into cakewalk. For the MIDI I use a keyboard. Sorted :)

Hey there Canopus,

Good job for a capture the idea coalesce the idea jobby. I live for dark and brooding stuff and even though you say it's not that dark I'd really dig it if you gave it a Sleepy Hollow spook house type feel. Man, I can't believe you don't dig the Pumpkins, oh well if we all liked the same thing there'd be one band with one song.

LOL! I could actually just see this in my head for a second.
