Wave form editing...

What I like to do is alot of sound art...noise, collage, snipet here, fade in there, effects in and out on a sample...anyways, I have been out of the market for awhile and wondered what you all thought about the better software for this type of endeavor.

Any mutitrack editor/ recording software would do it . Hell, you could do it with a two track editor, just not as easily. The range would be from dirt cheap (something like n-tracks) to middle of the road (Cakewalk/Sonar, Vegas, Cubase, etc..) to the top end (Pro Tools mix 24). That'a a range from less than $100 to about $15000. What do you have in mind?

For previous work, I have used ProTools. It was plenty effective.

That was several years ago, though, so I wondered about anything new. It sounds like same old story, really, a matter of how much you want (tracks), plug ins/effects you want and how much you can spend... middle of the road guy in that respect. I realize everything varies a little so I'll probably just hunt (including additional thread searches here) and see what I can afford and what complies with the computer I buy ( I am also reintroducing myself to that).

I suppose versitality is the key.
(I'll also need a system to input with (DIGI, Darla, etc.))
 
True, it's free but the plug ins will kill you.
 
Yes, the freebie is appealing, but I'm sure i'd want at least 24 tracks.

T-Rat, are the plug-ins pricey in general or more for ProTools?
 
Oh yea. DirectX is much cheeper for the same plugs, Anteres auto tune for example. It's half what it costs for Mac/Protools. Don't get me wrong, Pro Tools is based on farm cards that do all the processing vs. PC host based systems that the CPU has to do all the work and they're VERY powerful systems but with PCs so powerful now and getting more muscular every day that's not such an issue anymore. If you look around you can even find free (legal) directX plug ins on the web.
 
I use a Paris system and I'm real happy. More bang for the buck than ProTools nowadays I believe..?

Absoluty on the Paris system. Very solid and great sound.
