Returned from the dead
is there any way to take the wave-form/track of say a snare drum and use it to trigger MIDI?

Basically what I'm wanting to do is use a snare track to trigger the snare in EZdrummer....

Also, I wasn't sure where to post this so mods if you think it belongs somewhere else feel free to move it :)

There must be a way. A gutar synth basically takes an analog signal and converts it to midi. Cubase has a function in Variaudio that will extract a wave to midi, I've never used it with much success though.

Edit: Never mind I took to long to hit post, I was playing with the MIDI export function while someone was solving your problem.

lol don't worry about it. I appreciate the effort. The drumagog website says it has a midi in and out function... I'm wondering if I can use the midi out and send it to the midi in of ezdrummer.

I'm gonna download the trial :D

drumagog = win.

For the most part.

What I can't seem to figure out is how to get drumagog to tell ezdrummer to hit the drum harder.

You can do one of two things:

1. turn up the track feeding drumagog
2. turn up drumagog's output

Sometimes I put a limiter before drumagog to get the signal level up enough to trigger the hard hits. You will have to raise the threshold to keep from mistriggering if you feed it more signal.

Haha, I know what you're working on. Don't cheat that shit. Make it happen with what you got. I did. :D

I learned a long time ago that only sound engineers and musicians care about how something was done.

The listening public couldn't care less and are oblivious to the process. They just decide if they are entertained or not.

If you succeed in entertaining people, you have done your job. No matter how much 'cheating' you did to accomplish your task.

BTW. There is one other way to smooth out the dynamics: record the midi coming from Drumagog and edit it so that the hits are more consistant and louder.

That's exactly what I did. I tried putting the tracks in a volume envelope and raising it but that didn't help and I tried just turning the fader of the track up but that didn't help either. What ended up working was putting a 2:1 compression on the track and raising the output level of the compressor vst.

Greg - ill try it both ways and decide at the end which one sounds better. There's a lot of bleed from the cymbal and overhead tracks so I'm still getting quite a bit of the original snare... I guess we'll see how it woks out.

Farview - I completely agree, but the mix I'm doing isn't for anyones entertainment. I'm basically just doing a practice mix to A). Learn my new monitors and B). Test my mixing skills.

Right, that's why I said what I said. Work that snare track and get it good without sample replacement. It's for your own good. You don't learn shit from sample replacement. You're not selling that song to anyone. Any moron can dial up drumagog and make it sound good. You're trying to learn something.

Thats pritty cool, How does that work? does it just turn the audio pitch into the MIDI cc for that pitch does it work with velocity, also could you make it work in real time, so I could DI a guitar into guitar rig, and also program it through a soft synth?

Not sure which one you're talking about.

For the Guitar synth you need one of these...
http://www.roland.com/products/en/GR-20/

It comes with a pickup that you have to mount on your guitar that sends a signal from every string individually. It has a 13 pin cable that looks similar to a MIDI cable.

If you don't want to mount an ugly looking pickup some guitars come with it built in like this...
http://www.godinguitars.com/godinlgxtp.htm

It's pretty cool to play your guitar and hear piano or violin or any one of the hundreds of samples it comes with. You can also record the output as MIDI and use any other sample library you want.

Just google videos or search youtube for "GR 20".

If you where talking about the variaudio thing, Cubase has an option called VariAudio that breaks down a wave into notes. You can use pitch correction, change the length of notes straighten pitch and/or export it to MIDI. I havn't played with it too much, I've fixed the odd sour note in a solo using pitch correction with some pretty good success. As far as MIDI it has to be pretty clean I think, every time i've tried it my results where less than stellar. I only did it a couple times and really didn't put any effort into it. It does take the velocity and pitch modulation into account when it does the export if you want.

Yeah i've used variaudio on some vocals before but I did'nt know I could use it to trigger MIDI.

Wow I didn't know there where devices like that. What are Godin's Like as guitars, Ive been looking around for a new guitar. that looks like the image in my mind, bit pricey though

I've got a Godin and I haven't picked up another guitar since. I can't say enough good things about them. I've got one of these with the CognacBurst finish.

I'd go for the one with the whammy bar, The reason im looking for a new guitar is to ave somthing to experiment with, the synth stuff would you say its worth the price/ is it actually usable or just a fun novalty

Its a bit of a novelty, a really fun novelty. So far I've used it to record some strings in a song. It's kind of a more natural way to program midi because it picks up the velocity and pitch modulation so it doesn't sound so mechanical. The piano sounds amazing, even chords sound good. You have to adjust your playing style, depending on the instrument you're trying to emulate, but it doesn't take long to adjust.

I find myself using the piezo pup a lot more. It doesn't sound exactley like an acoustic but does a damn good job.

Plus it's a high end electric that has great tone.

Holy Shit, a buddy of mine bought Slate Digital Trigger and I was really impressed. You can use wav to trigger the drum sample and even cooler, you can specify the frequency that triggers it and suppress all other frequencies. So you can effectively eliminate bleed-over while also replacing a shitty snare with a Vinnie Paul modeled one. ;p

I think it's around $400 though, ugh.

You can do all that with Drumagog. The new version that comes out if a few weeks will also allow you to add as much room mic as you want and has a built in convolution reverb.
