Was I lied to?

Recently, I purchased the Tascam US-122 for recording my bass and drum tracks but had to return it because the drivers killed my computer (Win XP).

When I took it back I was asking for some suggestions based on what I was trying to do and the salesguy at Guitar Center suggested the MR8 which I was looking at previously.

I was comparing the MR8 to a Tascam Pocket Studio and he told me that the MR8 had a built in drum machine which pretty much sealed the deal for me since my drum machine recently fried out on me.

I took it home, read the manual and played around with it for awhile.

I am not seeing any sort of drum machine.

Was I lied to or am I missing something here?

Well, I don't know whether you were actually lied to, or were subject to the usual Guitar Center incompetence, but....no, no drum machine in the MR8.

Darn-it! That is what I figured.

I almost want to return it although I think I am going to get some use out of this product.

If I return it, it would be on principle alone.

tascam

the pocket studio uses compressed data, the mr8 does not, you will get better recordings with the mr8 but no drum machine.....

The Tascam has canned patterns that are a pain to use, not a programmable drum machine.

In the long run you'll be better off getting a drum machine that has the features you need - you can use that with the MR-8 if you keep it (great machine), and it will work with whatever recorder you grow into in the future. Drum machines from the 80's still sound great, so you have a huge variety to choose from at eBay prices.

These days w/ so much gear, sales people don't know everything that's out. I was talking to one guy the other day and he said there's a lot of turnover and burnout and they make minimum wage and some commission. He was only there 3 months. They had never even heard of the mics I was asking them if they had in stock. Them, "Behringer makes mics?" Me, "Yes, there's one right there in the case..." etc.

I may be confusing the POCKETSTUDIO with another mini-sized porta, but I thought it had a drum machine and possibly some sort of bass-synth built in. Is it possible that the salesman sonfused the two?

confusion

sounds like that is the most likely solution, id hate to think it was on purpose......(trying to see the good in all) hahahah

Probably - Zoom has units with drums and bass. I believe Boss units have a drum machine.
