Was about to buy Mackie HR824 MKII studio monitors when...

Hi,

I was about to buy Mackie HR824 MKII studio monitors when a friend of mine, a renowned TV/movies music composer, came along in the store. After a quick chat, he told me not to buy these, they lack too much punch in the bass, instead suggested me a 3000$ JBL monitor system...

My budget nearly hit 1500$...

Are Mackie HR824 MKII that bad?
The seller suggested me a 750$ system (claiming it was way better than the mackies): Blue sky media desk (with the woofer).

I want the best for that price (of course!) and the style I do is pop and jazz. I like good bass, not too much, but something clear. I want my monitors to be as flat as possible.

Any suggestion?

Read enough and you'll answer that, and the answer is many pro's do like them, very well.

I just sold some awhile back and the dewd I sold them to runs several studios and has them in all of his studios and hes living off his profession.

So its like do you prefer a Craftsmenwrench versus Jensen or Stanely?

Your in a "good materials" level with those 824 imo. If your worried about build quality and all that....you could do a helluva a lot worse.

I think I bought a used set for $400 and sold em for $700..within a few hours.
 
The mackie's are pretty good. the Adam A7's are in your price range, if you haven't heard them already check them out before you decide on anything.
 
I wouldn't go with the Blue Sky. If you've got $1,500 to spend, then spend it all.

The Mackies are a good choice, as are the Adam's mentioned earlier. I believe there are Dynaudio monitors in that price range as well.

Take a CD that you know *very well* to the store with you and try to listen to as many monitors as possible. Try to avoid just going by someone's word, use your own ears and judgement.

Thanks, that is exactly what I plan to do. The only thing is that a store is noisy, and you really need time to listen carefully. Also those sellers that can't stop talking! That is why your opinion counts! For now these are the ones I will listen to: Adam a7 and Dynaudio BM6a mk2.

You have to find the quietest time of the week e.g. Tuesday at opening time. And tell the gabby salesman that if you can't hear you can't buy.

Great advice on both counts. Trust me, that salesman will shut up real fast!

What the salesman can help you with is setting up the monitors so that you can compare them. If you go in with real money and are serious about making a purchase, they should and probably will go the distance to help you find the monitor you really like.
 
Went to listen to
Adam A7 in one store : Very Clear, but kind of a boosted bass, very weird but amazing
That is all they had in my price range
Went to another store, listened to Genelec 8030A, that sounds very good too! they cost a little more though...
That is all they had in my price range

Tell you more when I do an A/B/C test
