HOLY SHITE.......FEMALE, CHRISTIAN, AND EASY LISTENING?

............:D :D :D Very nice mix, very nice. Everything is very clean and well placed. I even enjoyed the song........made me wanna go watch the Lion King. If I had to complain about something, it would be the singers lazy vibrato..... it kinda bugged me. ........but that is major nitpicking. I agree with Sam, this would be GREAT disney material. This would fit into one of the mega cartoon soundtracks very nicely. Cool stuff mix, very nice work .........as usual. G

thanks Theron. I'm gonna have to pass all this along to the singer. I gave her a copy this morning for her to hear before she comes over again Monday night. She hasn't heard anything past her vocals yet.. keeping the fingers crossed...

edit..
G, you posted the same time I did. thanks...man with ONE eye!!!

dang...double edit
Pete...you snuck in there too. Thanks for the thumbs up. I too am hoping something good continues with this. All this great feedback is giving me a good feeling. I like that! I'm not sure if she has ever had anything on the internet with feedback like this or not (she better not kill me either:eek: )...but I feel I've found a "find"... Just hope I don't screw up and scare her off!!

mixmkr or mixmaster,

many times the vocals are loud and harsh, thus unbearable, but these vocals are loud and inviting. I dont know how you were able to do that.

The background is great, but not loud enough.

As usual, great tracking and mixing. I dont care for the song though.

Wail on!

I have to agree w/ alibish, the vibrato is a bit much- good for Broadway, but a little overdone in a studio. She's OK with mics, but doesn't sound warmed up. Note that she sounds much better at the end than the beginning. That's either butterflies, or she wasn't warmed up when you cut that. Are those *real* drums? If they are, track that kit again. If it's a machine, get a human. I forget who commented they wanted the drums more up front in the mix. I don't think that's the problem, and bringing it up front will only overpower your fairly good singer and showcase a drum track that really didn't help the song.
I would also say- give the singer just a little less time to get into that deep vibrato by picking up the tempo slightly. When you're anxious, perception changes- check the metronome. Keep at it, she's basically ok...-Richie

"the mess of my life I have made' tick ta tick... what is that? swings in time to. If it's on the vocals, guess you can't edit it.

The song does have a 'disney' sound to it

The song is a bit 'generic' sounding to me. I thought it was going to go into 'I'm your laaaady.' song, can't remember the title. It's sort of a mix between that and and that 'hero' song Houston did. Anyway, that is what I mean my 'generic'. Maybe that's what easy listening music is about, I'm no expert on the style.

The vibrato suits the style, no problem with that.

The balance between the drums and the vocals is off the mark, but as Richard said, bringing them up won't help. Retrack with a human.

Overall it's an ok song. I like the vocal sound, maybe a shade crispy, but cool.

The last line in the song "makes you my undefined'

'unde-fi-led' starts out noticably sharp and then settles into pitch. With all the music fading out, and the importance of that lyric - fix the pitch. It's like Robert Plant singing the last line in Stairway to Heaven out of key! :)

Overall nice work Mix, you got a singer with lots of potential.

cyan...thanks for putting up with listening to a song you didn't care for. For some reason, you give me the impression if I put up PURE garbage, you'd still like it. You seem to be my biggest fan.. Thanks for that...and you didn't even like the song!!! I appreciate your time.

richard...I agree with just about all you say. In her defense, she sang once (that night), I had bad levels...(I always just say; "sing" and hit record)...so I made her retrack it a second time. This IS a scratch vocal, definately not a final. Something to play with to write around. Your comments impressed me as someone who has a good set of ears on them.. thx. ya play drums?? ;-D

emeric...another grand set of ears. really glad you listened and commented. The tick-ta-tick...that's lip smacking, as I had her basically eating the mic to try and get some presense and warmth, but it ended up being too crispy as you noted. First mic choice, 2nd vocal take. Ahh....the drums....

to further try and save some face.....as noted above, this is a scratch track ...vocals and instruments...(something I always give people crap about putting up in the clinic...HA!!), but I wanted to get some feedback about the singer and the song. To now make MORE excuses, there is only about 3 hours of work in this, complete to nowhereradio, and I predict I will easily spend a good 30+ on a final song, I am sure. (I need all the time I can get to get things right!). I think the singer is going to be more anal than me, actually. She didn't even really hear the playbacks either....sang, and then left for home. I left the autotune in its wrapper!!

Again...muchos gracias to all the great ears here that have been invaluable. This place is a God-send....

Leave it there!I've never actually see one in real life but I've heard the horror stories of singers turning into "Auto-tune junkies",hooked for life much like a heroin addict.Dont do it man! It's a crutch!:D

ok,I realize you were just joking about the auto-tune but I couldnt resist.I personally think that one piece of equipment is the devil and those that use it to correct their terrible pitch problems are equivilent to Milli Vanilli:eek:

p.s. Im still not gettin all the disney comparisons.LOL.Disney is too politically correct to go for lyrics like this.;)

Dang

I was hoping I get a vocal comment in before somebody picked up on that last note. It's off.

Vocally...great. Her vibrato makes it tough for her to just jump around square into pitch at times.

I may look like a jerk for posting this, and PLEASE keep in mind that I thought she sounded great (AND I downloaded it), but these are SSSSOOOooo easy to fix.

:56 - sharp on "one"

1:14-1:15 - "be NOT"

1:20 - "Love"

1:53-4 "AM YOUR"

These are all small deviations. The only REALLY noticeable one is at 2:37...and that one should probably be fixed.

(sorry...I'm having kind of a hypercritical vocal day today). OVERALL...GREAT DAMNED RECORDING (do I go to hell for saying that?)

:D

no...jerk you are NOT...I appreciate the close attention you obviously gave. I will listen to the times you posted, for sure..but I will fix the one at 2:37, WITHOUT A DOUBT, when we re-do the vocals for a final take:p(along with rerecording all the instruments too!). I saw her this morning and gave her a copy of this (she hasn't heard anything AT ALL yet), and she commented on how "sucky" her performance was...and she didn't even listen to the playbacks... so...I give her credit. Hopefully she'll not notice the "ruffie" instrument stuff...specially the drums...But we both knew the timing was off when we finished her vocals. We just turned off the click track and went with it. It all started with that dang-blaster rhodes pno sound....that was the REAL culprit..then it went downhill from there, as that was the first track...then vocals..then the other crap. Putting on drums towards the end was asking for trouble, I know...

Again...thanks for the time you spent listening and commenting. I'll definately will be looking forward to these kind of ears when we do something more final.

Now...buzz of jerk-head...and ... :D :D (jus kiddin'...of course)

I would like to know what does the "my undefined" means ... i don't get it .... :(

I know you are going retrack this but acc guitar would be nice on this (just makes it more contemporary IMHO)

also... I do think the song is a little "square" at times ... I think I know why you asked ... :) may be if you didn't ask I wouldn't say (or notice) anything.. hm I dunno... I have to say that there are probably many people that will like the song ...

about the singer... well I'm spoiled I got a good one at home... :) but if she is willing to work and she hears the bad spots herself and you like her voice then I don't see a problem... it does seem to fit the song ... though a little strained as in not relaxed .. but hey 2nd take... ha pretty good..

looking forward to shreding the next version to pieces... :D
it's better be perfect... I think you aura took a hit on this one... :D
I'm jocking people... jocking.... :D
cheers

It's "My Undefiled "...It's the title of the song. to be "Undefiled" is to be pure without corruption.....it's a Christian thing.

that's what i get for browsing so late ... it's "undefiled" not "undefined" ... doh! I get it now... thanks... I'm off to bed.... :)

I messed up the spelling in mine to.

Great job Mix!

Thats a great sounding mix on those vocals.

Your mixes are very fine... great work! :)

Well I hear Christian music all day at work-and they just took away the dsl conn. I usually use-so on my home cheap computer speakers-this sounds good-real good actually-can't really comment on the mix but I didnt hear any problems-vocals sounded great-I heard some rythmic issues with the vocal delivery a few times (eg:1:10-1:13)but nothing big-just personal preference. On my cheap lil system I wanted to hear the music (keys)more-but again just my personal pref. Nice melody, good song-will listen again when I can use headphones. Hmm did I actually say anything????

I thought this was a real pretty song. The singer has a beautiful voice, which you have captured well. I really enjoyed the song.

Not that either of you need advice frome me, but here are some thoughts... When the chorus hit, I wanted the singer to really belt it out - or at least hit it a little harder than the verses. I'm sure she can, but it seems like she pulled back a bit.

I also wonder if the keyboard part would sound nicer if it were a traditional piano sound. As I listen to it, I think it would.

Just thoughts. Again - top notch job.

The vocals are the best thing on it.
I think i heard the 'tune' in an elevator the other day.
No.. seriously it needs a bit of acoustic Guitar.
