Unkle Ticklefingers
I just got some new gear today, and retracked the guitars, bass, and vocals in this. It's my first mix, and maybe only, so pretty rough. I did a version a while back, with Nakatira on one rythum guitar, and lead, but took it out as I'm not up to his ability. This is pretty gritty, Garage/ Stoner Rock.

And Rami, Thanks for the drums. Pretty cool to play with real drums.

Cool, Dog...Dying to hear this, but I'm at work...I'll check it out in a few hours.

Sounds great. Great piece.

Drums soud fake, tho! :p. (J/K)

OK ok, I didn't listen all the way thru. Gotta run but as much as I heard the playing sounded nice. When the guitars fade in the intro some noise bleeds into the mix. So in other words all those power chords strikes that go ta da and then there's quiet, you can hear the amp noise a little bit.

Will probably listen more later. :).

Who's got the vocals on this. It's not RAMI, I'm pretty sure. Is that you Dog.

Around 6:37 and on, the outro, very Iron Maiden'ish. Nice tones with the gutiars. Nice drumming dude!

I like. :)
Guitars are nice and drums are real nice although they could do with more lo end. Its like they have the perfect hi mids but the lo is kinds lacking.

Nice work RAMI and DOGMAN.,

Eck

Hey Dogman that's some tight guitar and bass and an intense vocal. Great drum work by Rami. I like the balance between the bass and guitar but the bass might be hiding some of the low end of the drumset. I'd like to hear more kick in it.

The fortissimo ending is well done. Good arranging there.

:D

great song to cover.. not a bad try.. there was some good moments.. I really like that bass sound during the heavier parts.. bass gets a bit loud and boomy and the mix is a bit muddy..

to be honest with you though it's pretty rough overall.. there's timing mistakes at some point on every instrument and it's capped off with a vocal that is off time and out of pitch pretty consistently.. some parts aren't really played correctly.. as long as you're having fun I guess that's all that matters.. keep at it! Sabbath rules! :D

Re B.Sabbath's post, there are I agree occasional timing inaccuracies, and the vox is done in a unique (and yes, pitchy) chant-like style that is Dogman's own. I hear the vox more though as angst-filled in a song like this and the intonation variance adds to that for me. Just my own take and probably influenced by my previous listening to him rather than strict objectivity. But beyond the vocal, Dogman, if your guitar playing keeps advancing as it has in the last 6 months you're going to be kicking all our asses soon.

Just wanted to chime in and say I dig this version...my own personal taste is to kinda put my own spin on covers and change em' up a bit...just makes it a bit more interesting for me to play em every gig!War Pigs is a tune I've heard covered a million times, and its the unique versions that I like to listen two a second time.I think you did a cool job here and your emotion really comes thru on this and in fact...I don't think your any more pitchy than what I heard of Ozzy at this years Ozzfest! :) ,I also really liked your Bass and Guitar sound/tone...is that a result of the new equipment you were speaking of?If so,what was it...inquiring minds want to know :D !
Now..if your ready to hear some real pitchy vox..watch for my cover of Queens "Tie Your Mother Down"...gonna be posting it in a bit...Keep Rockin' Dog!!!

Thanx guys...Still haven't heard this yet. When it comes to the so-called timing of this tune, I tracked the drums TO THE RECORD since I didn't know it well enough to just start a click and drum to an imaginary band. I don't know if they played to a click or not, but I was playing to their timing. But it was fun to do, so who cares.

Well, thanks all for listening. Naka's version was more true to the original, and I just couldn't do that. It was beyond what I play like, so I just did it more in a C.O.C., meets Bongzilla kind of way. The hardest thing to me was, there are some really empty spots in the song, so nothing to hide my lack of real chops. That's why I chose to make it so dark, and weird. I might try and remix this to see if I can clean some stuff up.

Bubba, yeah with the quiet spots, the amp noise, and my sloppy playing really shine through. :D

Eck, I've been having a bit of difficulty mixing the lower end of this, as it seems to build up pretty fast. The version without vocals sounds really good in the drum department, but I need to clean some stuff up, as the drums seem to get buried when I put the vocals in.

Tim, thanks. I tried to play bass the way Geezer did, but some of his note choices were harder to transition to cleanly, and I ended up leaving big holes, so yesterday, I just redid it my way :D I will try and fix some of the tones, to see if I can get the drums to have more space. They actually sat real well before I added the vocal, and I did try and eq the whole mix some, and probably over did that.

B. Sabbath, I think I recorded the bass too loudly, so it got muddy at times. And you're more than correct about some rough spots. :D
Anything with my vocals tends to be rough. And I had to play some different things, as trying to play the original version, I couldn't keep anything in time. I kept playing lines one time too many, and stopping short other times.
Thanks for the listen and advice.

Variaxman, the new equipment was a Sansamp bass DI, and a couple of Nady mics. I actually played the guitar part twice, but each time was mic'd with 2 different mics. One time, the 2 Nady mics, one on each speaker, then the next time, my At 4040, and an MXL V93M. I just blended the 4 tracks into 2, and used some eq on them to try and get a somewhat vintage tone, yet not too thin.
Thanks for the listen.

Rami, thanks for the drums. I tried not to ruin them, yet wanted them to sound somewhat like the original, so eq'd them a bit, and added some verb.

Thanks again for the listen, and advice guys. Much appreciated.

I kinda thought that you were playing to a track. as it sounded like you were following the track rather than the track following your drums. Still tight all the same and very very impressive to do it this way Rami.

You could try placing a hi pass on each drum and then boosting at around 100-200Hz a dB or so. Keep the lo end on the bass minimal and then when mastering you can boost the lo end a good 4-6dB and compress that range.
That should give you a clear yet substantial tight lo end.
Eck

Thanx Eck...yeah, it's kind of limiting to play to a track like that...Especially a song that has so many holes in it...I love what Dogman did with this...It's definitely HIS version. Great bass sound and playing, as well as guitar too. Cool stuff.

This does sound like a lot of fun. Love the bass sound. Rami - awesome drums. Always loved this song, not one to really give too much mix advice. Not quite qualified. But to me this sounded pretty good, some good suggestions in this thread. Real cool.

take care

Thoroughly enjoyed it. Very cool. That is coming from a major Sabbath fan.

Take 'er easy,..

Hey Dogman, really enjoyed your take on this tune. The sansamp really sounds great - clean and not boomy - good purchase. The guitars are nice and thick - you hear lots of questions as to how to get that thick sound - I think you nailed it. The vocals are new style metal - very appropriate in the 21st century. Rami - amazing drumming as always! Cool Track! :D

Dogman there are timing issues etc as B.Sabbath stated. I think if you cleaned up the "verses" and got them a little tighter it would really help out. The other flubs are not nearly as apparent. The first lead part seems to miss the key in parts. That could be good or bad lol, guys like Kerry King basically made it their trademark.
Im listening on headphones but the bass seems overly loud in relation to everything else. The sounds overall seem ok on these phones (sennheiser). I could do with out the vocals but to each his own.

So Dogman, when are you going to let me borrow this new gear of yours?!? Sounds incredible man. Love the bass sound, the guitar sound is extra crispy and thick on my system being played really loud. Love the overall sound, good stuff :D

My only suggestion that I didn't see above, but might have missed it... is that the first solo sounds more like a bass solo. The lead is quiet and the bass is loud. Maybe thicken that baby up Dog style!!! (whatever that means)

Haha, Nak finished this in like the first day, and our versions are popping up like months later :D Now that's dog style! (again, I don't know what that means)

Nice work fellow dog. Cheers!
