Hi, this is my first post here. I've been playing in bands for some time now and have only used my silly little analog 4-track to get my idea down. However, I'm looking into buying a computer for the sole purpose of recording/mixing. I'm very knowledgable with computers, however, I don't know where to start with this certain project.

My question is, what all do I have to buy (and what do I need the stuff for :)?

Any help is appreciated,
Chuck

Chuck - Monty's answer may not be what you wanted to hear, but he's right. There are so many variables to this recording thing that you need more background info. so that you can ask more incisive questions. The type of info. we need to be able to help:
Budget;
Desired quality of product;
Type of material you're recording

... but reading through the main site here will answer many of your immediate questions, but also bring up many more.

You need a good sound card, either a mixer or some preamps for the mics, and some software. A CD-RW drive/burner is useful too. You've probably got the rest of the stuff you need for the moment.

Oh, and check the home page... :)

My question is, what all do I have to buy?

Try starting with this:

200 mhz MB = $70
200 mhz Chip = $80
64 mb SDRAM =< $70
Sound Card = $45
Hard Drive (2 gig) = $80
Keyboard+mouse=$50
monitor (15") = $80 (at shows)
(cables, jumpers, small parts) = $30
Shell + power source (200 volt) = $70
video + controller cards = $100
IDE CD-ROM (4x) < $35
Putting it together yourself = $PRICELESS$

Hop over to "Computer recording and soundcards" and wade through some old posts. It's all in there.
