Is there anyone out there that can help, Id' appreciate it

Thanks for the help fellas, I should mention I'm in the UK, I think the shipping might prove to be to much

Just had a quick shufty at UK ebay. No 388s there at the mo and, to be honest, I can't really remember the last time I did see one.

As an alternative you might like to consider the Tascam 238 which is a rackmount cassette 8 tracker.

Alternatively, if you really want to stick with R2R there's always the Fostex R8. Or, if you really need an all in one unit, the Tascam 488 MK II and the Yamaha MT8X

Note: the latter two are four buss only. IOW, you can record on all eight tracks, but only a maximum of four at a time.

Thanks for that, and your right shudda mentioned. Whats the difference in quality between the r8 and the 388

388: dbx Type 1 noise reduction, 7.5 IPS
R8: Dolby C noise reduction, 15 IPS

Theoretically the R8 should have a better high end frequency response but, tbh, I'm not really sure how much better.

thanks Mark, I know these are real greenhorn questions, but I've been using digital, Roland 1680, for a few years now and a friend of mine uses analog, and the difference is astounding. All the sounds and tones I suffer to achieve with digital, he gets naturally from analog. So I'm going back to the old skool baby.

Bear in mind we're into old school garage rock n .roll, I'm almost embarassed to say, he uses a 4track cassette, tascam something or other that was state of the art in '85. I know its not everybodys thing, but to us its exactly the sound we want check it out http://www.myspace.com/theroutesjapan

Will do, that stuff hasn't been mastered or anything, I know its not for everyone, but I like it dirty like that.

Very good, well bloody done, I didn't know you are in the UK, do you ever come across any of these. Do you fancy selling me yours ;)

Erm...

No :p

TBH, I don't really have the room for a mixer and recorder package and I've no desire to go back to four track or to cassette.

Ha Ha, I didn't think so, but keep me in mind if you change your mind, I've got a Roland 1680 to throw in as a sweetener. thanks for the advice Mark its been invaluable, and if I manage to get my mits on one I'll let you know, and ask for a bit of advice. all the best, my email is info at motorsoundsrecords.com

You could try Craigslist. They have some British sites.

Or just keep an eye on ebay.
