Wanted: Opinions on Shure KSM27

Hey all.

Was wodering if anyone has ever used a Shure KSM27 for recording vocals.

There's a used one for sale locally for $170/bo - seems like a great price. Just wondering if it's any better than some "new" large diaphram mics coming from China, Australia and Russia (i.e. MXL, CAD, Studio Projects, Rode, Oktava, etc., etc) for about the same amount of money.

I have a shure KSM27 and like it a lot.

that price is decent - i got mine for $140 US.

for comparisons - i also have 2x oktava mk012, 2x shure sm57s, and 1 AT 3035.

i prefer using the AT3035 on my voice(and most male voices for that matter) to the KSM27. it's easier for me to get a thicker sound out of the AT3035.

however, the KSM27 is a verstaile mic. it works well on acoustic instruments and especially female voices. i didn't like it much on guitar cabs(thats what the 57 +3035 are for). it rocks on mandolin.

if you have a soft voice, the KSM27 will do a great job at capturing all of the subtleties. it's a good mike if you have a "breathy" voice(ala Nick Drake).

Maybe the website needs to be redesigned so the search feature is larger and more obvious. It's not like it jumps out at you. There should also be a line stating "Newbies! Use this first instead of annoying the long time users with repeat questions!"
 
Search Function...Recording Snobbery Won't Go Away

I am curious. What issues should people ask about then if you can't ask questions that could have possibly been answered in the past? I'm sure almost everything has been answered at some point. Wouldn't that make this a ground breaking up to the second recording technology board? Okay: So here is my question:

I heard that in 2025, Shure is going to release a microphone that incorporates nano-technology into the recording process. Do you know if these nano-mics are going to require wireless phantom power before the nanos can storm the mic into the vocalists vocal cords to get the most natural sound?

By the way ... I had a few questions. I heard there was this big ship that sunk, and it was called the Titanic. I was really amazed to hear about this. Do you have any info you could share with me about it? Did it hit something? Get caught in a storm, perhaps? I also heard that a famous president was shot ... guy by the name of Kennedy. Is this true? Maybe you have some feelings one way or another about this. Perhaps we could discuss. I'm personally outraged over this, and feel it is a great loss.

Snobbery aside, you're likely to find better quality answers using search first. There's only so many times a person wants to dedicate the time to answer the same question with any amount of detail. Generally you'll find that most responses to questions like this come from new people who aren't sick of seeing it yet (I'm not saying that post count equals audio knowledge, but there are a lot of really knowledgable people that have been here forever).
If you search you'll often find a 3+ page thread about the product in question with quality reviews and often audio clips.
 
I think thats the first time ive ever made a big remark about the search function.

I feel bad about it actually. But seriously, its getting harder and harder to come and answer peoples questions here because everytime i go into the list of new threads they are the exact same questions EVERY time. Its getting rarer and rarer to see questions that i didnt answer a week before.

Whats an upgrade from a Studio Project C1, B1, MXL67, Behringer B1? Of course this isnt one mentioned above. But i know this has been covered alot before.

Its like everyone gets on here and expects everyone here to give them the answers to everything. Im sure ive done it too though.

Specific questions and specific needs are fine. But damn, asking about a mic that has posted opinions all over this entire board?

It really does get tiresome...

Hey Darnold, what's a better mic for rap vocals?

A C-1, B1, v67, or an sm-58 ?


I was also wondering if you could give me a good mic for heavy distortion (?) I've been using an sm-57 and all I get is this thin, fizzy sounding distorion out of my $50 Crate amp. Do you have any better mics you could suggest?

Would an sm-58 be better than a 57 for that?

sports would definitely suck if you asked to join a team and they told you to read a book about the sport first and then come try out for the team when you are as knowledgeable as they are about the sport.

i didnt expect the answers to everything and i didnt always choose the answer that was rammed down my throat either..

"I have about $300 and i want to start recording. what should i get?"
"audiophile 24/96, yamaha 10/2, studio projects b1" standard issue answer.
is the selection arguable? yes. well what are some new arguements? what about the at2020 mic with that setup? well everything is already been covered in the search function. start reading....

hmm what to look for first. audiophile 24/96 aka ap 24/96 aka 2496
yamaha mg 10/2 aka yammie 10/2 aka mg10/2 aka 10/2
audio-technica 2020 aka at2020
studiop projects b1 aka sp b1 aka b1......but isnt there another B1? yeah the behringer B1.
behringer B1 aka bad aka terrible aka crap aka sucks aka stupid.

this is usualy where you get 4 opinions and then arguements for most of the thread

a past thread breakdown will consist of 4-6 opinions on the product, maybe 2 from people who actually use it and own it, 1-4 from people telling you it sucks and to save your money and buy something that costs $200-$300 more and then its 3-8 joking or insult posts. about 5-10 threads of that and it gets a little frustrating. some newbies (most newbies i bet) expect an answer, hope its the right answer and dont usually ask a question in a cocky manner.....then come posts like "Wanted : people to start using the search function to see if issues are already addressed."
ok great...will you show me that thread that pertains to exactly what I'm asking because god forbid i would ever want to bother the great darnold.

we all have our moments of agitation.....just see it as putting in the two thousand hours of community service that president bush wants you to do.

after all, this is a home recording community :)
 
I really think something bolder at the top of the page could solve alot of headaches on both sides. Then if someone felt they needed more personal advice, they could then pose a question.

You've got to be kidding! As smart as you guys are and you can't figure out what I'm implying?

I've built websites, and each part of the page is designed to draw the eye to a specific feature (kinda like a woman, chessrock... or a man, not that there's anything wrong with that!)

If there was a LARGER, more well defined search area at the top of the page with a little advice for newbies to "Try here first before asking a question" or something more innane, then "If you don't find your answer, feel free to ask one of our handy-dandy smart-as-an-ass experts."

Here the word search is about 5 pixels tall. There's a search function???

Something like that...

But dont most forums, or all forums have a search function on them?

I guess im guilty of not using the search function when i was newbie, and who knows maybe even when not newbie. Its understandable and maybe it shouldnt be blamed on them. But it really is irritating still.

I just ignore threads that have anything closely related to an already heavy discussed topic. I want to be involved and help people but i hate saying the same things every day.

The times i do read them to see if i can contribute, im surprised to see the same people replying the exact same thing every day. I dont get it.

Anyway.

rboyce - did you find the information you were looking for in the search function? or do you need any more specific advice on the KSM27? Let us know, this is your thread man. Sorry to hi jack it and have you feel left out.
