Hi All,

I'm a n00b on this forum after discovering there's indeed a side totally dedicated to home recording..which i think is AWESOME!!!

I have looked into several threads, and used the search option...i even checked the newbies FAQ but coudln't find the answer to my question...if there is one.

i'm a guitar player and a drummer, both not good at it, and jsut for fun..

I actually have 2 questions.
a little background
one i am recording well, for ages... probably 15 years. first i used a 2 track. than i got a 4 track tascam (with cassete tapes ) and used that with enourmous pleasure.

than I found out you could also record on a pc.. (woooHH -)) so I bought myself a brand new compuer back than (5 years ago) and got enough memory and a sounblaster audigy, cause it had a line in ..and that was mandatory for me.

i discovered audiicty and recorded a load of (what i call ) music.
here are some examples. (couldn't add as this is my first post )
so all the music above is made like this

I have a roland td-3.
i plug it into my boss gt 10 and the output goes into the line in of my computer.
i put the boss into tuning mode so it gives a clean signal.

i copy the left mono track of the drums to the right to have it stereo.
after this i play in all guitar tracks, doing the same as above.

now when i sometimes got like 40/50 different tracks my computer start to stutter in loading al data, playback.

I'm in a band also and we sometimes wnat to jam out on new idears and want to record at the same time.

that's qusetion one. how can i record drums/guitar at the same time having
a roland td3 , a guitar a boss gt 10 and a line in.

and also we rehearse. and i normally record our stuff with my boss micro br (good thing for bands it's records great!)....

quetsion 2. we wanted to demo our new stuff.. so I wanted to record drums and afterwards guitar at home (with audicity).
but I have only 1 line in....how can i record multiple trakcs at the same time within a DAW?

i have tried reaper, and studio one and protools... and i have come to the conclusikon that i need a new computer.

can someone tell me
what soundcard i should use?
is there a interface which makes me record more mics at the same time on the comtpuer which i can assign to a track within a DAW?

whow a long rant..i hope this makes sence.. if yo udont want to read. a summary

- how can I record drums/guitar at the same time on the comtpuer
- how can i record multiple mics on my computer , what do i need for it
- which DAW is adviseable to have and what should i buy to get everything up and running.. i read stuff like mbox and so one..but what is that?

thanks..for reading and maybe replying...

a ultra noob

Geert.

Hey Geert sounds to me that all you are to need is an eight channel interface. and enough microphones of course. ;)

thanks for the reply...but there's where my lack of knowledge comes in...

an interface...yes an interface....that'doesn't ring a bell to me.... what does it do? how should i attach/assign it to my computer.
can you tell me what a interface is, which is good/great and also how it works together with a DAW?

great to have find this forom, thanks for the replies..hopefully i can be of any asstance here somewhere down the line (i can show you how to play triplets on a guitar hahaha) sorry.

The 50 or 50 track stuttering problem is because of your CPU limitations. If you have that many tracks going you will need a dual or quad core CPU and craploads of Ram

- I suspect you would need less tracks if you used Reaper or a better DAW instead of Audacity and started grouping channels and effects

An interface is a soundcard with as many inputs as you require (and can afford).

Thanks all im gonna read that article can you give names of interfaces which i should check? i thuoght i would have to get myself a extern someyhing griuping channels and such right now sounds like rocket sience ill read the article and check the forum more this is a great place to be ... Anybody tried ninjam?..

Is that a new strain of pot? :o

Right now your limitation is most definitely your soundcard. The link above will get you on the right track, I might suggest thinking about getting an interface with MIDI connectivity so you can expand the possible sounds using your TD-3 as an engine of sorts.

40-50 tracks at a time will most definitely be tough for an older computer to work with, depending on specs and whether or not it's a dedicated studio computer.

Thanks all im googling interfaces at the moment

I do a lot of overdubbing and a l r track are also 2,so i get to 50 easily.
With ninjam i mean the online jamming... I kinda like it ehhmm ahh well

I think what i need is a new pc a 8 track full duplex interface a daw , i think presonus studio one or something like that and tons of creativity and trial and error

The Alesis Multimix 8 USB 2.0 is a great deal for an 8 channel full duplex mixer - the Presonus Studio looks good too - little more expensive and I haven't used that particular interface, but it looks like a good piece of equipment

yeah shipping is free. i checked dutch companies selling this which is for 340 euro's or something...
indeed grats= free
free= good :-)

This is the one that does 8 channels of recording, I'm pretty sure the other one only does 2x2 I/O.

Alesis MultiMix 8 USB 2.0 - 8 Kanal Recording Mixer | eBay

This is kind of limited as well, as it has only 4 mono channels with mic pre's plus 2 stereo channels without mic pre's, so while using it to record 8 seperate tracks may be possible, there will be some compromises on both the inputs and the monitoring.

this

or this

would, IMO be much better choices for full 8 track "live all at once" band recording.

I Sound like a broken record here, but look into that zoom thingy R16 or R24.

8 chan interface/control board plus it records like a standalone, has effects, bundles some LE version of software too, and costs about the same as another deDicated interface just for the channel ins.

No I don't work for Zoom, I'm just a big fan of cheap multitools for hobby recording.

This is true - those cheap ones are the USB series NOT the USB 2.0 series - only the 2.0 have multi-track.

I have also heard good things about the Zoom series

Alesis ships with Cubase LE 4 and has like 99 preset effects - so sounds like they are pretty similar - the alesis can NOT be used as a control surface - so you acn not control your DAW sliders with it which the Zoom can do - also the Zoom can record into internal memory so you could record on location
