There are 6 simple steps, and it's easier, and cheaper than most of you would think.
1. Affiliate yourself with ASCAP, or BMI.
These are the companies that collect royalties for you,
and write you your checks.
2. Pick a unique name, and register, this may take up to 5 weeks with ASCAP and 30 days with BMI.
3. Once your name clear's, you need to file a
"Fictitious Name Statement".
You can get this form from your local library, or city clerk.
After that form is filed, it'll be submitted to your local newspaper, it let's people see your doing buisness under that name.
Now your legit.
Cost = $10-50 form, $10-150.00 Notary to sign it.
Takes 2-4 weeks for the newspaper to print it.
4. Once your form is signed by your local judge, go open a bank account under your record label's name.
Now you can cash, or write check's under that label.
Cost = $20-40.00 depending on the bank
5. Register ALL your songs with the copyright office.
Cost = $30.00 for a whole album
6. Register ALL the songs with ASCAP, or BMI
(whoever you signed up with)
Now you can issue licenses to movie places, record labels,
negotiate deals, sign contracts, etc.
It's VERY easy, it does take some time, but it's worth it.
And YES, you have to file taxes under your record label.
