Just finished a new one. Did a few things differently from my usual process, but the song is the usual same-ol crap. :laughings:

This is based on real-life experiences at the local Wal-Mart. :drunk:

Wal-Mart at Midnight
http://www.lightningmp3.com/live/file.php?id=25428

This is fresh out the fryer, so any critiques/comments are welcome and appreciated. :drunk:

A midget greets you at the door
A bearded lady is sweeping the floor
The cashier weighs 500 pounds
A convict is replacing stock
A one-armed girl is folding the socks
The albino guard is doing his rounds
Hey! Hey! Hey!

We're going to Wal-Mart at midnight
Wal-Mart at midnight
It's a sight, come one come all!
We're going to Wal-Mart at midnight
Wal-Mart at midnight
It's a fright, but you'll have a ball.
Let's go!

The manager is covered in tats
Buy some milk and a baseball bat
Ride an electric cart if you are overweight
There's an Icee spill covered in ants
Some little kid just shit his pants
We're gonna need a clean-up on aisle eight
Hey! Hey! Hey!

We're going to Wal-Mart at midnight
Wal-Mart at midnight
It's a sight, come one come all!
We're going to Wal-Mart at midnight
Wal-Mart at midnight
It's a fright, but you'll have a ball.
Let's go!

Alright, here we go....

We're going to Wal-Mart at midnight
Wal-Mart at midnight
It's a sight, come one come all!
We're going to Wal-Mart at midnight
Wal-Mart at midnight
It's a fright, but you'll have a ball.
Let's go!

Wal-Mart at midnight
The sun has set
Request your last rites
Wal-Mart at midnight
They're having a sale
Prepare for a fight!

I love the way the song moves. Some real good lines in there. Great playing.

If I were to offer anything constructive, I'd like just a little more beef in the mix. The snare I think could be a bit heavier. I liked the hard compression on it though. I'd think you could add a little more in the 180hz - 250hz or so to the guitar.

Liked the bass tone.

Real fun song.

I can hear your stuff in a movie soundtrack like Superbad. The words give a good visual. Good mix.

Ride an electric cart if you are overweight- Reminds me of how the carts in one of my local stores say "MEAT CART" on the back. . . always makes me laugh.

Sounds as good as an elephant riding a magic carpet

Hilarious. :D
Thanks for listening. :)

Thanks dude. I think I agree about the snare. This is my first attempt at recording that snare and I'm using a new overhead setup, so I don't have the whole process dialed in yet.

Lol. Okay, thanks man.

Dude... This is drastically different from your usual sound. Contrasting this against Transsexual Party on Mars reveals a whole heckuva lot more compression on the drums.

Definitely different. Is it an improvement? I don't know. My ears tell me that the drums as a whole, to me, sound like they're more a part of the picture the song is painting, whereas Party on Mars' drums sound a bit separated sonically. Mars' drums still fit, and they sound stellar, but just a bit "on their own", if you will. *sigh*... I can't explain this well at all..

Anyway.. The drums being more part of the whole picture seems to have come at the cost of resolution. The snare on Mars' song hits me in the face with full crystal-clear clarity. I love it. I hear the whole drum. The one on this song still sounds good, but seems like the whole body of the snare has been lost in compression.

The song itself has clever lyrics, but the music and the lyrics don't seem to mesh as good as your usual parody-type songs.

Party on, dude!

When I worked at WM I had a very large woman complaining about an electric cart that wouldn't move. I guess she thought the battery was low. So she tried another one, then another one. All this time I was thinking to myself that the cart is fine it just has a max weight limit and you've passed it about a hundred pounds ago. Just keepin' the spirit alive. Awesome song Greg.

Okay thanks dude. You touched on what I'm aiming for with this sound. I wanted the drums, guitars, and bass to make more of a driving, unified wall of sound. This song is the first in a new batch for a new album, so I'm leaning towards less isolation and more bigness overall with everything. Like you asked, is it an improvement? I have no idea. I just want to go a different direction. As long as it doesn't sound *bad* while being different, I'm cool with it.

I tweaked the snare in an updated mix up top.

Lol. Thanks. That's hilarious. Maybe if she'd actually walk she wouldn't be so fat.

Nice tune Greg! Makes me want to go listen to my Adolescents and Dwarves records. :)

Diggin' the Two Minutes to Midnight section - awesome. Reminds me of Propaganhi doing Judas Priest on With Friends Like These...

Great job!

Thanks Joey. I was thinking about asking you to sing the harmonies in the Maiden part, but I didn't want it to sound too good. :o :D

Wow, thanks Queepy. I beefed up the low end by using a fatter bass tone and I mic'd the kick differently. I didn't wanna just add EQ to the mix. I used bigger sounds to begin with. I wanted it big, but not muddy. I was listening to the Ramones "Leave Home" album on vinyl last month, and I was like, "yeah, that's the sound I want." So this is what I came up with. :o

I see your new one in the clinic. Gonna check it today.
