can any of you vsr 880 users out there tell me more about the way internal and external harddisks are used with this baby? i heard a rumor that it doesn´t make sense to stuff any disk greater than 4gb inside!? there´s a kind of partition limit of 1 gb and only four are possible per disk? can anybody confirm this? how much in minutes can be recorded anyway? i´m thinking of 8 tracks ...

does anybody know where to find a manual - maybe in pdf format?

I'm not sure exactly how big of a harddrive it will utilize but it is bigger than 4gb.Mine came with a 6gb installed giving me 6 one gb partitions.I think it will create up to ten one gb partitions so the answer MIGHT be ten gb max.

You can record eight simultaneous tracks in any mode at 44.1k,I think at 48k it will record six tracks simultaneously.I always record at 44.1k.

Recording time varies with the recording mode and sample rate.I only record at 44.1 and I usually record in VSR mode(24bit rdac compressed)and I get 50 min per partition recording all eight tracks(total track time is 404 min per partition). So if I recorded all partitions across all eight tracks I would get a little over five hours of recording time.If I record in MAS mode(16bit uncompressed)I would get roughly half that time.

thanks for your quick replies - i´m a bit wiser now ;-)

however, in the meantime i have a few other questions: how do the different compressed recording modes compare to uncompressed recordings in quality? does there exist an umcompressed 24bit-mode? if yes, is there a track count restriction in this mode?

sorry for my persistence, but i just want to be sure befor i throw my hard-earned money out! ;-)

my main use for this baby would be recording drums and small bands on location - in connection with a spirit folio sx ...

There is no uncompressed 24bit mode only 16bit.I compared the VSR mode(24bit rdac compressed)to the MAS mode(16bit uncompressed)and to my ears the VSR mode sounds better. The only restriction on the VSR mode is that you give up the internal EQ.Not a big deal for me but only you can decide how important that is to you.

thanks again, randy!

the decision is made - yesterday i finally ordered a vsr 880 incl. 10gb hd from thomann in germany for eur 622,- ... can´t wait to get it in my fingers! ;-)

btw: from a music store nearby i heard roland - at least the branch in germany - deal with enormous financial trouble - sounds like the reason for selling out some older stuff ... hmmm? i hope this isn´t a bad sign for roland international ...

i'm sure you'll like you vsr.I know I like mine.I haven't heard anything about Rolands financial status but I know the VSR has been discontinued.I think the newer 24 trk rack mount units sealed its fate.Eight has been fine for me though and if I need more i have them in Cakewalk.Have Fun!!:D :D
