I'm considering purchasing a used VS-CDR - the older model - and just wondered if someone could let me know what the differences are between this older one and the newer VS-CDRII that's out? My main questions are:

1. Will this CDR work with the VS-880EX's special CD format?

2. Does "Toast" (or any other CD burning software) come with this model?

3. Are you able to burn all types of CD's with this model, or only Roland VS-880 format CD's? I'm wanting to be able to back up my computer data, make audio CD's, and back up from the VS-880 - will this machine do all this, or would I need the newer model?

Thanks so much!

I can't give you absolutes, but an older CDR unti should work just fine with your machine. There is no software required to burn cds, the software is already on your machine. If you buy a new burner, you'll probably get Liquid Audio and and some other software for syncing with midi tracks via computer. I just bought a new burner to fo with my 1880 and I did notice a software update insert to make it compatible with some of the older Roland models. If you need specifics, let me know and I'll did out the paperwork on the update.

Oh, you can burn both data cds for back-up and audio cds to red book standards. The drives are also RW compatible. You can use it for your home computer as long as you have a SCSI port.

Thanks so much for the response! I really appreciate it...

I've been reading and reading all day about CD burners and my eyes are crossed! One thing I'm curious about is why is the Roland's burner so much more expensive than some of the "computer-based" burners I'm seeing? Is there really a big difference between the Roland, Tascam, etc., that run over $500 and the ones that are around $200-$300? My decision right now is whether to purchase a used Roland VS-CDR (the old model) for $300 or get a new "computer-based" CD burner for about the same price...

Thanks again for any suggestions!

In addition to allowing you to burn CD's of your music, the Roland CDR is set up to store the data on the machine's Hard Drive as a backup so the HD can be cleared to allow more recording.

Thanks for the response, virtual.ray! I also wanted to just double-verify that the Roland CDR WILL work with a Mac with SCSI... I've gotten conflicting answers from different places - Musician's Friend just said:

"The VSCDRII will write to cdrw, and cdr media. It is specific for the
Roland VS hard disk unit so it is not compatible with any computers even though it is just a standard SCSI formatted connector. It does not come with software because it is not meant to be used with a computer."

???? I had *almost* decided on just going with the used Roland CDR since it's set up for both the VS and my Mac, but now I'm confused again because of this response! Is there anyone out there who is actually USING the Roland CDR (original version) with both the VS 880 and a Mac?

Thanks again!

Jacki :)
