This is a take from last nights band practice..

Chris Tondreau on Guitar and Vocals

Me on Drums (Live Kit)

And our Bass player (Dave), not from BBS

(We don't have a band name yet)

Straight off the floor.... All we wanted to do was capture a listenable archive of last nights practice..........We weren't out to make a Mutt Lange production....

It will give you an tdea as to what were up to..

We are getting ready to gig... This song is from last night... our 3rd band practice.....

It's a Tondreau Original....

Enjoy!

'topher's got some pipes, ain't he? Steve Perry would vomit with jealousy ;)

Sounds like you're all in the pocket, what ever that means... Friendly sounding toon... in ze key of D.

Thanks for sharing, man

Sounds good for your 3rd rehearsal.

You definately need to get some backing vocals happening on that tune though.

BV's

We actually do but they were really whack, so I wimped out and muted them... hehe...

Were workin' on that....

Yeah Chris is an excellent singer....

Hey, you guys kick ass! Nice job on drums, sounds like you guys are gonna be a tight unit. Very cool song, too. Rock on!

Very nice for live. You're ready to gig after 3 practices, I'm not ready to gig after 3 years with my band  :D

no name yet? Is the homerecers used already? I would think so :p

Vox, how are your drums miced? I really like the sound you got out of them for a live recording and that's something I always have trouble with. :)

Thanks Barometer.

I have an Audio Technica 4033 about 4 feet above the kit as an OH....

The snare is miked with an Audix D1.... and the bass drum is some Shitty Apex "Bass Drum Mic"...

Thats it.

No strategic placing or tuning.... We just wanted to get it down, and didn't care about the sound...

Recording live drums is a relatively newer thing for me.... Im finding that the more solid and consistant a drummer is, the easier the tracks go down...

I'm still a bit sloppy in my drumming..... I'm just lately getting to the point where i'm pretty confident..

I have only been "seriously" playing for about 6 months,

Did some on and off drumming since highschool, but Im slowly getting pretty consistant in my power.... In other words, generally i'm always hitting the drum in the same spot, and at the same level...

That helps the recording process alot

ok so now i read the last post and rrealize you are playing drums...upon such realization would like clarify:...the fact that i didnt mention the drums is a good thing..sometimes drums need to be so "in the pocket"..as to become the glue .....and sometimes glue doesnt have to shine overwhelmingly to do its job!!....(plus i play drums and i ALWAYS overplay everything....ALWAYS...

but i stand by everything else i said before....:D

Thanks for the info Joe. I've been playing on and off since high school too and only kind of seriously for the past 3 years. I'm really getting into it now and know what you're saying about consistency. I'm quite sloppy myself and I think it shows especially when we record live. And my mics are all shitty Apexmics. I hope I can even get close to the sound you got. Performing doesn't give me the same difficulties, I guess cause of being in the live moment. Again, great drums, even more so that I know your setup. I think you're doing fine :D

Yeah, I have Tama Rockstars with the Starcast mounting system... Just bought them... I still have my Electros...

I was going through a mesh head every night and at $20 a piece thats not good..... I like the electros for recording midi and stuff like that and for practicing, but when I have to bang 'em to keep up with these other loud mofo's, I pull out the live drums....

Im using a Yama Maple Custom Absolute Snare..... My pride and Joy..

Thanks, and Dave is wild, in Bass playing and personality!.. He's Craaaaazy.....:D

Only known him for 3 weeks and love him to death!

blushing shyly....

Thanks a lot guys for the complements so far!! We're having a lot of fun, and Joe and Dave are really fun to work with - and very professional. :D

We're really happy with how things are going, and how we're starting to get pretty tight.

I agree about the backing vocals... I have an original demo of the song from a while back, so they're planned out. It's just a matter of working them into the performance.

Joe works hard to make sure that we have a good sound in the room, and this goes a long way towards getting these recordings to help us assess what we're good at (and what we're not,...) and towards feeling good about the way we sound during the practices. It's hard to find people who are willing to take the time to work on details.

I hear ya. The cover band I was in a few years back was a 5 piece and everybody sang well enough to sing lead. It was still be a real bitch to get everybody to pitch good together. The bass player in my last band could sing lead OK but had trouble pitching on back-ups. He would frequently end up on the same note as me.

Well, for a practive grab, it's well done! it's a bit overdriven overall, but it sure is hell to ride faders and drum at the same time isn't it? :D

Onward to the important part, the performance:

You sound a LOT better than the old "3 practices" excuse... ;)

Very solid vocals, sorta Steve Perry, sorta Survivor. Good, solid pocket. the left hand is juuuust barely to the front side of the beat, consistently. This is not a bad thing, but it does give the groove a certain "upright", "white rock guys" kind of sound. From where the bassist and guitarist play their eights, if the drummes would lay back just a teeny hair on the backbeats, try to edge them to right on the beat or 1/128th after, just add a little loose, funky lope to the groove, this would settle into a MIGHTY, devastating pocket. Listen to Red Hot Chili Peppers and Dave Matthews drummers for the sort of thing I mean. It just feels a little edgy and rushed, but it's more than acceptable as is.

But then, it is only the 3rd practice, and I'm beeing WAY esoteric, sorry.. :)

I was doing the chair boogie, in case you wondered if I liked the piece.. :D

Cheers!
