I remember reading a Reznor interview where he was asked if there were any difficulties involving the recording of "Downward Spiral". He said Ruiner was the one song that he just couldn't get right no matter what he tried. I like the sound of that one too. One man's crap is another man's...whatever...

i beleive i read the same article...i just love the layering of that song...synths, guitars..dry vocals, breaking glass...it has everything

I'll second that. I was going to mention that album for sure. I was just reading Cloneboy's new thread wondering about some of the worst sounding masters. The first thing that came to mind was the Chili Pepper's "Californication". What an awful sounding record! Compare that to "Blood Sugar Sex Magik", what a total 180!

Good call! I just listened to Californication a couple weeks ago after not listening to it for probably a year. I was shocked at how crappy it sounded. I didn't notice that when it was first released. I guess that is evidence my ears are becoming better trained.

But Blood Sugar Sex Magik is like honey dripping from my stereo speakers. What a great sounding album! (the songs are great too).

Listen to "Josie" by Steeley Dan. I just listened to "Don't Stop".

It never hurts to expand your horizions. I listen to ALL types of music. I had off the wall in my collection already.

I'm curious to see what you think.

Do some of that legal downloading and inject some Radiohead into your grey matter,
and if you're into beats and that stuff, download some Kid A, the experimental electronica album. Think Aphex Twin and DJ Shadow. It's good stuff.

Also another excellently mixed song is breathe. Keeping everything audible over that bassline deserves recognition!

After the last comment, I thought maybe I'd throw out a couple songs I was thinking about for the best mixed songs ever:

In the warm category:
Mark Cohn/Mark Cohn (1991) - especially Ghost Train. (I'm also a sucker for well written songs, so I may be biased)

In the newer category:
U2 - ATYCLB - Beautiful Day
A great example of using the sonic spectrum

In the busy category:
Radiohead - Hail to the Theif - 2 + 2 = 5
It's partly the producing, but these guys blow my mind. The sounds are incredible - some of the panning sounds so amazing, it almost messes with your ears.

Those are three of my picks. I'm open to more suggestions and I'm definately enjoying reading the thread we have going here...

A few Radiohead examples for you, which MAY be more suited.
Climbing up the walls played loud in the dark will FUCK anyones mind up a little, Electioneering, Blow out (Pablo Honey), Talk show host.

Oh and if you're a Radiohead fan try to download, This mess we're in, by radiohead AND PJ Harvey. Not the best mastering ever, but an extremely good song.

Admittedly, I'm not a fan of the Beach Boys at all, but we're talking about mixing, so I'll have to say Pet Sounds is one of the better-mixed records I've listened to.

One of my personal favorites is Close to the Edge, by Yes.

As far as modern stuff, I have a real soft spot for OK Computer (Radiohead). What can I say? It just provides my ears with such entertainment, I can't get over how well it was engineered and mixed.

. . . And I like how Jane's Addiction Ritual de la Habitual sounds. Good stuff there.

these are often the things i reach for as my warm up material at the start of a day. i know a lot of this isn't so mainstream, but i try and keep things broad here as i end up working with so much different stuff here
